Kenyan Foreign Minister resigns after corruption allegations

2010-10-27 23:56:58 GMT+7 (ICT)

NAIROBI, KENYA (BNO NEWS) – Kenyan Foreign Minister Moses Wetangula on Wednesday resigned his post after allegations of corruption relating to the purchase of properties.

According to AfricaNews, Wetangula and his permanent secretary resigned due to the scandal that involved the purchase of properties by the Kenyan government in Japan, Nigeria and Pakistan.

“For the sake of Sirisia, (his constituency), Kenya, friends, PNU (Party of National Unity) and family, I have decided to step aside to give government the room for an investigation," the now former minister said.

The 54-year-old official decided to step away after Nigeria lost millions of dollars in the purchase of properties abroad, including land and residences meant for ambassadors and diplomats of the east African country.

The properties were reportedly bought at heavy inflated prices and part of the money intended for the deals ended in the hands of officials at the ministry. Wetangula is the latest Kenyan official to be involved in corruption related to land purchases.

Wetangula faced a hostile parliament on Tuesday that accused him of the corruption scheme. The minister claimed that he was not guilty and passed the blame to other officials in his office.

Previously, William Ruto, the former Higher Education Minister, and Geoffrey Majiwa, Mayor of Nairobi, lost their posts over corruption allegations.
