European Commission adopts priorities for 2011 to address economic, financial crisis

BRUSSELS (BNO NEWS) -- The European Commission on Wednesday announced that it adopted a work program containing strategic priorities for the next year in order to address economic and financial crisis.

The work program will continue the recovery after the adversities endured in 2010. The Commission said that the European Union (EU) institutions showed resiliency, decisiveness and solidarity in tackling the challenges of the economic and financial crisis.

"The work program adopted today will ensure that recovery is sustained into the new year and beyond. I note a great degree of convergence on the overall priorities for Europe. I hope that this will translate into early political results to the benefit of citizens," European Commission President, José Manuel Barroso, said.

The work program for 2011 reflects the Commission's determination to lead Europe out of the crisis suffered this year and set the path towards a future of prosperity, security and social justice.

"The European Union has proved equal to the challenges facing it but we are not yet out of the woods. Our policies need to reflect our ongoing commitment to creating sustainable growth and jobs based on the Europe 2020 Strategy and we need to concentrate on initiatives where the EU can bring a real value-added," Barroso added.

The new EU work program outlines five main priorities: sustaining Europe's social market economy out of the crisis and beyond; restoring growth for jobs; pursuing the citizens' agenda, rights, freedom and justice; Europe pulling its weight on the global stage; and making the most of EU policies.

The European Commission will work in cooperation with the European Parliament and the Council to ensure a broad ownership of the overall approach as well as on the individual initiatives.

In early September, Barroso began an open debate where EU institutions discussed the priorities for the body for the following year. The resulting Commission Work Program took full account of these discussions and translated the Commission’s vision into concrete actions.
