Gunmen kill six in Mexico City shooting attack

2010-10-28 21:37:40 GMT+7 (ICT)

MEXICO CITY(BNO NEWS) – Six people were killed and another was injured in Mexico City on Thursday after gunmen in two trucks opened fire in what seemed to be another drug-related shooting.

According to witnesses, two trucks opened fire after driving by a group of young men, aged between 20 and 25, who were standing at a street corner in Mexico City's Cuauhtemoc district. Two of the victims fell to the ground in front of a corner store and three others in front of another nearby store. The sixth victim was a couple of feet (meters) ahead of the others.

The wounded man was rushed to Balbuena Hospital, but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The motive behind the attack is still unclear, although local police have described the shooting as a possible drug-related conflict.

On Wednesday morning, suspected drug cartel hit men arrived in two cars at a western Mexico car wash and opened fire, killing 15 people who were working there. Three other workers sustained injuries in the attack, which targeted patients of a nearby rehab clinic who were working at the business.

This attack occurred just three days after another bloodbath, possibly also related to drug cartels' violence, when suspected drug cartel members burst into a drug rehabilitation center in the northwestern city of Tijuana, killing 13 people.

And last Friday, a carnage in Ciudad Juarez left 14 people killed when gunmen stormed a house where people were celebrating at a birthday party.

Some 25,000 people have died in drug-related violence after a military campaign against drug cartels was launched by President Felipe Calderon at the end of 2006
