I had a quadruple by-pass there back in 2002. Found that the care, attention, facilities, staff both nurses and Doctors excellent. The deal I was on was a 10 day programme and from start to finish I was happy with the whole procedure, from memory the cost was about 150.000 baht.

How much these days?

Did have one problem which was resolved quickly. My operation was due to be done on a Monday and early that morning was advised that the hospital stocks of my blood group was low and the Thai Red Cross who supply blood to most hospitals, also had none available, so the operation was changed to the Wednesday. Wednesday came and everything was done. The Accounts Dept wanted to charge me an extra 7000 baht for the 2 additonal nights I stayed. I made the point that the extra 2 nights were due to the shortage of blood and not my fault, but the hospitals. A quick chat and the matter was resolved.

The following year the consultations I had with the doctors there all efficent and no complaints.

Recently my wife has been having Chemo treatment at Siriraj Hospital ( a govt. hospital) and even though a huge hospital, we are totally impressed with it. They have a Heart center which is open to falangs living here. I went there 3 weks ago, took my passport, signed in and saw a doctor as it is 4 years since I have had a check up. Spent 1 hour with him. Had an EKG, blood tests., and given medicine for the BP. Total bill was 2789baht.

May pay to check their web site, www.theheartbysiriraj.com and the heart center's phone 024199777.

bunnaag,

When I was writing that reply I checked with my wIfe re the cost of the by-pass, she said 150,000 and I had thought 300,000. However she handled the actual payment and is positive that was the fee. No way would it have been 1.5 million. We didn't have access to that sort of money then.

Rehabilitation? Once released from the hospital went home and had several weeks off work, lots of rest and slowly back into exercise like walking short distances then improving on them.Following my first heart attack and the by-pass found the recovery by the body is quick as long as you don't overdo it. I went back to the hospital for checkups every fortnight for 8 weeks and then every 3 months for a year.Never had a problem since (touch wood).

Slightly off thread but the cost of private hospital care in Thailand has certainly gone up in a big way over the last 10 years. As an example when I first went to Phyathai in 1997 it looked like , felt like, smelt like, and was a hospital. Since then it has had the " hotel look make over", and I personally find it all over the top.The Phyathai group was badly caught out in the Baht/ dollar meltdown in 1997, and the Banks put an Australian medical administrator in the Hospital to sort things out. He told me that the money waiting to be made here in the private hospitals was huge and they ( the private ones) would be all racing in to provide the public with the latest in hospital care, plus the up market look, advertising and public relations, gimiky deals, etc.and costs would soar. Seems it has happened.

My wife recently spent 10 days in Thonburi Hospital, 200.000baht for everything, brain biopsy, Scan, xrays, blood tests, bed, food etc ( even charged an extra 300 baht for another pillow for one night).Busy busy hospital and never in 10 days did I see another falang... there all the customers are Thai. So costs are for all patients in the private system to bear

To those who say "Look's much cheaper than Home" should remember that it's not home. Apart from cars, private hospitals, and most imported things Thailand is still a cheap place....look at the cost of a house or a condo in Bangkok 200,000 US$ or Aust. dollar gives you some thing of quality and style you can't get back home for twice or three times that price

I know a Thai neighbor had emergency quad bypass at Bangkok Hospital (not known as a price leader) last year and bill was over 1 million so yes - prices have greatly increased over the last decade.
