WASHINGTON D.C.(BNO NEWS) -- U.S. President Barack Obama on Monday congratulated Brazilian President-elect Dilam Rousseff, the first woman to be elected president of the South American country.

President Obama called Rousseff to congratulate her on her historic victory in Sunday's presidential election, in which Brazil's former Chief of Staff and candidate of the ruling Worker's Party received over 55 percent of the total votes.

Obama commended the people of Brazil for their faith and commitment to democracy and highlighted the strong relationship between the U.S. and Brazil and remarked their shared commitment to deepen and explore new fields of cooperation.

Beginning in January 2011, Rousseff, 62, will replace President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, her mentor and political guidance. She is a former guerrilla leader who fought against the military dictatorship that ruled the country from 1964 to 1985. She was imprisoned and tortured in the early 1970s.

The U.S. leader expressed Rousseff his desire of meeting her soon in order to continue working closely on bilateral fields such as clean energy, global growth, reconstruction assistance for Haiti, collaborative development efforts, and other issues of global importance.
