November 4, 201015 yr i bought a pajero sport some time ago, was thinking to get a gps navigator but cant decide on which is better: 1. Stand Alone unit (Garmin Nuvi 1460, etc,) cost: 11,900 baht i was kinda worried about the reception and the problems i will get when i attach the navigator to the tinted windscreen or the dash board. didnt want to have wires all over the car, i heard the gps unit will have to be charged often, therefore a cigarette lighter receptacle must be used. 2. Installing an Alpine, Kamaz, Speednavi GPS receiver/ navigator unit (installed to the 7" alpine screen that came with the car) Cost as stated; Alpine: 29,000 Kamaz: 21,000 Speednavi: 16500 as quoted by Rocketsound - http://www.rocketsound.co.th/ on 4th Nov 2010. if i gonna get this, i will have to decide on which is better, gives better routes and stuff? any recommendations? anyone here installed theirs with the above mentioned navigators? i dont think i will be able to detach the unit after i sell the car. it aint mobile, but it is solve the problems of the wires coming out of the cigarette lighter receptacle. it is kinda expensive, aint sure if i m going to use it too often, i really like to watch/ listen to concerts in the car, especially when the traffic is really bad. 3. GPS Mobile phone (Garmin Asus phones) Cost 11,900++ i have an Iphone with me, but the navigation sucks on the Google maps, the routes aint make any sense? i heard garmin was good and kinda wanna try the phone. but i friend told me that there are disadvantages like the battery life, reception, and the wires from the car charger. as of course will damage or stain my dashboard when i attached it to the car. 4. Buying the TOM TOM app from itunes i already have an iphone so it will reduce the burden i carry.and of course it comes with disadvantages like the battery life, reception, and the wires from the car charger. as of course will damage or stain my dashboard when i attached it to the car. advice needed.
November 4, 201015 yr I have your option 1 in a Fortuner. I have no problems with attaching it using the sucker cup on the windscreen and the reception is fine. Map updates are pretty cheap. The battery doesn't last long though and I do normally have it plugged into the lighter socket to charge.
November 4, 201015 yr I can only speak for the Alpine unit, and to put it in nice words; the Alpine navigator is a sack of <deleted>.

November 4, 201015 yr Got Pajero sport as well but couldn't be bothered to mug around with Alpine stuff. So just bought Garmin Nuvi 205w recently and it works perfect. A blessing espcially for bangkok when you go somewhere wihtout the missus who used to be my GPS ;-)

November 5, 201015 yr Paid thb 7900 for the Garmin 205w and the 215w was 10900. Only difference is that 215w has junction viewer which means that you can see a photograph of the next junction you are gonna enter instead of the normal animation that you see. Didn't feel the need for junction viewer since you get verbal directions all the time and the animation is very good and clear so that will do it for me. Edited November 5, 201015 yr by mek

I don't remember the price, I bought it 8 months ago from MBK. The prices may be cheaper now. I just checked the windscreen and the only mark from the sucker cup was a coffee mug kind of ring that came off easily after a wipe with a rag.

November 5, 201015 yr thanks mate! i will get 1 of those soon, i guess. is the sucker cup thingy from garmin too? is it like a package? It's a nice bit of kit. I could easily live without the junction view though and save some cash. The sucker cup and lighter socket charger are included in the package.

Concerning aftersales! Haven't tried yet. Bought it in Central Bang Na so dont think there will be any problems if I need assistance. Got the english edition Thailand maps installed when I bought it and got the thai edition on cd rom which can then be stored at a micro sd card and then used just in case the missus wants to use it, doubt it though. It all came with the sucktion cup and its to easy to install. My only question concerning this gps thing is why didn't I buy one years ago
