PhilHarries
My complaint about KFC in Thailand is that, unlike in the West, its popcorn chicken is, to a large extent, dark meat. So, they lost my business while I lived in Thailand. Just shows how you can't please all of the people........ My favourite meat, chicken or turkey, is the dark meat. But then the majority of people prefer the white meat and fast food chains should target the majority. However dark meat is cheaper than white so the bottom line rules, as always. Ulysses G.
Interestingly, here in the States they just did a survey of people asking them, in terms of chains, where the best and worst burgers were. Who got rated at the very bottom? Yup -- McDonalds. Yet, their sales are highest. And the reason they get away with it is because McD's is the place people think of first through years of heavy advertising and having the most outlets. I would guess that the negatives about the burgers are more do do with over-familiarity. Many of us have been eating the same hamburgers for decades. However, that - and convenience - also probably explains why they outsell the rest. People are not going to keep eating food that they don't like because of advertising. freeurmind2
Walked into 24 hr McD's at 7 AM looking forward to a great breakfast. Bought two sausage muffin sandwiches, ate one on site, and brought the other one home for lunch. At lunch time, I found out 2nd sandwich tasted and looked a day old. The bun was cardboard-y and the sausage didn't taste anything resembling edible. Jaysuz, They gave me yesterday's mistake!
dantilley
I hadn't eaten McDonalds for about 8 years, then a couple of years ago my resistance finally broke and I ate at a branch in Bangkok. The verdict: not too bad actually. Not amazing, but just as I remembered it really. That, I think, is McDonalds' key to their success - consistency. The Big Mac I had in Bangkok tasted nearly identical to the Big Macs I remember having in the UK. With McDonalds, you know exactly what you'll be getting, and that you'll (usually) be served reasonably quickly, and a lot of them here in Bangkok are open 24 hours. So, consistency and convenience is what's made them successful. Burger King, on the other hand, is far, far inferior over here compared to the Burger Kings back home. It's expensive too for what you get. KFC, despite appearing to be the most popular of the three over here, is also pretty rank, and again not as good as elsewhere. If I had to pick one of the leading American fast food franchises, it would probably be Subway. But that would be the best of a fairly bad bunch. McDonalds would be 2nd I think. NanaFoods
My in-law brought my son a cheeseburger from McD a couple days ago. He ate about 1/2, and so I ate the other half. I haven't eaten McD's in a long time, but I don't remember their cheeseburgers being so sweet. This seemed really really sweet for a burger. Has anyone else noticed this... is it just me? Or is this, perhaps, a Thailand market adjustment?

Can't vouch for the other menu items, but it's conceivable that there may be a bit of sweetness added to please local palettes.
Wavefloater
I've had no luck with NA fast food joints here. Tried Burger King in Pattaya a couple of time about 10 years ago when I moved here for the first time and found that the burgers were completely void of flavor. Another time, I went into a MCD's with a friend and attempted to order a set meal with fillet o' fish, salad and water (instead of soda as I don't like Coke, Pepsi, etc.). However, they wouldn't substitute water for soda, so I didn't bother with the order. I've never been a big fan of McD's, so I've never gone back to one, and that means I haven't eaten at one in Thailand or any other country, for that matter, in about 15 years. The last time I got KFC, I found the chicken to be very strange and unnatural -- some pinkish stringy kind of meat, so I've never eaten there again. With the lack of success I've experienced, I haven't tried any fast food outlets in ages. I've always thought of McD's as a restaurant for children, anyway. That's certainly who they target in their advertising.
canuckamuck
Ever notice how when the word McDonald's is used half of the posts to follow are from people who are desperate to announce to the world that they don't eat there and the food is crap? It's like a badge of honor to be be in the McDonalds is crap crowd. There are thousands of products I am not interested in but when they come up on a thread I don't feel this compulsion to tell everyone I don't use that item. Lots of chains make crappy food, McDonalds at least has the best consistency of products. So if you don't like it here, you won't like it anywhere, so move along and eat your sophisticated currently trendy food. Some of us enjoy a fast high calorie salty greasy snack, and we know what it is and we don't care what food fascists think.

LOL I thought this thread was about McD's, and I guess I missed the desperation you mention. I think it's pretty natural that many people don't care for Ronnie's offerings, and those opinions would be stated in a forum thread that focuses on McD's. As for my "current trendy food", give me a plate of well-prepared Thai food, any time. And maybe I am i little proud that I don't support a company that sells under-nutritional overpriced food and spends billions of dollars brainwashing children to crave their product. Either way, I could never get as passionate about defending any corporation that makes obscene profits by selling a potentially harmful product as you do. Each to their own. We don't all have to like junk food.
gkinbkk
The Big Mac is about the only thing that is decent from McD's in Thailand. Those double cheeseburgers are awful at any temperature and I find them to be overloaded in salt as opposed to sweet not to mention dripping in fat. Would be great if they did the Qtr Pounder here.....

Ulysses G.
The word is pseudo-intellectual - which is not quite the same thing. However, you do not seem to need to announce it on every thread where McDonald's is mentioned, so you do not fit in that particular category. Edited November 11, 2010 by Ulysses G.
