English Lessons For Native English Posters

Recommended Posts

One of my pet peevs is the way that many posters on TV (to make it Thailand related) incorrectly use THEN and THAN. This appears to be a native English speaker problem as much as non-native.

To help posters, below are descriptions of when to use each word.

Use than as a word indicating comparison.

- There are more onions than carrots in your fridge.

- John was sicker than a dog last week.

Use then as a word indicating time.

- First there were four, and then there were two.

- Wash the clothes, then put them in the dryer.

Why bother to correct posters?

Some people may not know they are making a mistake. Why not help them learn? It also may help for non-native speakers too. They may get confused seeing the incorrect use of some words.

<deleted>' spelling police are back?

Wait 'til the apostrophe gestapo arrive...

Good to see you used the correct abbreviation of "until" instead of using "till" .. ;)

Why bother to correct posters?

Because when you get too LOOSE with your grammar you just might LOSE your audience. It doesn't bother me too much. I just get amused with the discussion.

But people with get THERE if they get THEIR spelling correct

But to get there, THEY'RE bound to make small mistakes and type some wrong words

Why must we go THREW all this again?

We don't have to go THROUGH it again, THOUGH, I THOUGHT it would make an interesting discussion.

Hi OP

While I am sure you mean well with your initial post this kind of thing is covered in forum netiquette and a little tolerance, understanding and consideration for others will not only make their posting more enjoyable but probably yours as well.

Considering all the different flavours of English this bit of pedantic fluff is rather obsolete in a global forum.

But I'll leave you with:
