Israeli forces strike suspected terror sites in the Gaza Strip

JERUSALEM (BNO NEWS) -- The Israeli Air Force on late Saturday evening carried out two airstrikes in the southern Gaza Strip, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said on Sunday.

The IDF said its Air Force targeted two alleged terror-linked sites in the southern Gaza Strip, striking an empty olive farm east of Khan Younis and a smuggling tunnel under the borderline between Egypt and Gaza.

"Direct hits as well as secondary blasts were confirmed," the IDF said, although there were no reports of casualties from Saturday's airstrike.

The IDF said the sites were targeted in response to Saturday's Qassam rocket fire from Gaza, which landed in Sdot Negev Regional Council of southern Israel but caused no damage or casualties.

Since the beginning of 2010, approximately 180 Grad missiles, Qassam rockets and mortar shells fired from the Gaza Strip have landed in Israeli territory.

The Israeli government holds Hamas, classified as a terrorist organization by most countries, solely responsible for maintaining the calm in the Gaza Strip and for any terrorist activity emanating from it. "The IDF will also continue to respond harshly to any attempt to use terror against the State of Israel," it warned.

In the winter of 2008-2009, Israel launched a surprise airstrike against the Gaza Strip which marked the beginning of a three-week military conflict between Israel and Hamas, killing nearly 1,500 people and leaving thousands more injured and displaced. Danish Television Reporter Challenges Reports Of Dire Gaza Conditions

A Danish veteran Middle East reporter found indications that conditions in Gaza are not as bad as has been subjected.

Plenty of food and petrol but water and jobs are in short supply

Reports of major suffering in Gaza may be exaggerated, according to a Danish TV journalist.

Steffen Jensen of TV2 has been based in Jerusalem for years, and has often visited Gaza, though it is must more difficult for foreign reporters to get in than before.

“This time, I had expected to see real suffering, because with all the fuss in recent days to bring some ton humanitarian relief in - so much that people actually sacrificed their lives for it - so had to really be a deep, desperate situation in the Gaza Strip. No food. Long queues in front of UN food stocks. Hungry children with food bowls. But it was not the picture that greeted me,” he said in a Danish language report translated by Google.

Jensen said he discovered there were almost as many traffic jams in the past, and petrol was not even being rationed.

Food appeared to be plentiful, even in the Shati refugee camp.

Many stores were closed because Hamas has declared a general strike.

Jensen said he could not say that things were as good as they have been in the past.

When he spoke with a Palestinian woman she said, “We have nothing. We need everything. Food, beverages ... everything.”

"I must admit I was a little surprised. I must admit. Because when I call down here to my Palestinian friends, so they tell me about all the problems and deficiencies, so I expected that the crisis was a little more clear.

And the first woman we interviewed in the market confirms this strange, contradictory, negative outlook:

"We have nothing," she said. We need everything! Food, beverages ... everything! " As she commented she was surrounded by “mountains of vegetables, fruit, eggs, poultry and fish...” Much of the food comes from Israel.

Another woman, Rifka Abu Nahal, said the real problem is water. It could become a threat to farm level as the water table sinks and becomes permeated with salty Mediterrean water.

The biggest problem, she said, was high unemployment.

The World Food Programme has warned that up to 1.5 million people in the Gaza Strip may face serious food shortages due to the destruction of between 35% and 60% of the agriculture industry during the recent Israeli siege of the strip.

Director of the organization, Christine van Nieuwenhuyse, told reporters "We are hearing that 60% of the land in the north - where the farming was most intensive - may not be exploitable again. It looks to me like a disaster.”

Van Nieuwenhuyse went on to say "Already, the price of meat has tripled since the Israeli operation began. What is more worrying is the situation over vegetables” and pointed out that the Palestinians will now rely on Israel for food.

When Israel withdrew from Gaza, multi million dollar greenhouses and state of the art irrigation systems were left behind. American Jewish donors had bought more than 3,000 greenhouses from Israeli settlers in Gaza for $14 million last month and transferred them to the Palestinian Authority. Former World Bank President James Wolfensohn, who brokered the deal, put up $500,000 of his own cash.

Guess what happened?

Palestinian watched looters carted off materials from greenhouses. In some instances, police even joined the looters, witnesses said.

Perhaps if Hamas had made an effort to preserve and protect the important assets, there wouldn't be a problem today? Better to fire missiles and blame Israel when there is an attempt to stop the barrage of death.

Five Palestinians civilians killed in incidents along the Gaza fence and

in air strikes

In the two-week reporting period, Israeli forces killed five Palestinian civilians and injured seven others. In 2010, 46 Palestinians (including 19 civilians), three Israeli soldiers and one foreign national have been killed in the context of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in the Gaza Strip and southern Israel. Another 187 Palestinians (including 162 civilians) and eight Israeli soldiers have been injured.

Since the beginning of 2010, 39 Palestinians, including two children, have been killed and another 66 Palestinians have been injured in tunnel-related incidents, including air strikes, tunnel collapses, electrocution and the explosion of gas cylinders. In another tunnel-related incident, resulting in no casualties, air strikes targeted and hit tunnels, destroying some of them and causing minor damage to a number of adjacent houses.

Palestinian armed factions launched a number of rudimentary rockets and mortar shells towards southern Israel, including at military bases located along the border; no Israeli injuries or damage were reported.

Palestinian armed factions launched a number of rudimentary rockets and mortar shells towards southern Israel

War is hel_l and not only soldiers are killed. The Palestinians Arabs declared war on the Jews before Israel was a country and also multiple times since they declared Independence and have lost every time.

The Arabs need to stop the fighting and work toward peace or they have no one but themselves to blame for the consequences.
