Which Garmin Gps For Thailand

Featured Replies

I am down to the final decision on which Garmin GPS model to buy. The selection is down to the 3750, 3760T, and 3790T. After eliminating all the features that are the same for all three, I come down to the differences listed below.

Since there is a good variance in the price, (3750 - $279.00/3760T - $399.99/3790T - $436.00 - all 3 come with the base North American maps so I am not taking into consideration the additional cost of Thailand specific maps to be added) I am interested in finding out if the few differences will matter for use in Thailand.

3-D building view. Only the 3790T supports it. I doubt the 3-D building view is implemented anywhere in Thailand, if even there. I don't consider it essential, either way. Any comments on implementation in Thailand or usefulness appreciated.

Bluetooth. The 3750 does not support it. Is there anything you use the Bluetooth for that you would consider important enough to pay extra for it?

Motorcycle-friendly. All three indicate that they are not motorcycle friendly. Does anyone know what they mean by this? Are any of you using one of these models while you ride? If so, what are you using as a holder for it?

Many thanks.

I ended up with the 3790t because it was the only one with speech recognition. I've always wanted a practical speech recognition unit, but even this time I didn't believe it would work well enough to be useful. I was surprised that it did. I now use it all the time when the car is moving. "Computer on?" And the computer comes on and asks me what I want.. I tell it, it does its thing. Very nice.

Bluetooth is useful when I forget my BT headset for my phone.. but I wouldn't make a decision on this feature.

Terrain view I think will be very useful once ERSI implements it. These models are too significant and too "thaiish" in appearance for the Thai market not to pick them up and support them. My fear is they'll choose to support/import only the bottom version. With all the tall buildings in Bangkok you'd think 3D building view would be nice too.. but I'm not holding my breath on that one.

Motorcycle-friendly?

Here are the features of the Zumo 66.

Designed By Bikers For Bikers

Featuring a bright 4.3" touchscreen color display, the zûmo 660 puts all the information you need in an easy-to-read format as you travel down the road. The zûmo 660 also has a glove-friendly intuitive interface that makes entering information as easy as shifting gears. In addition, the wide sunlight-readable display makes for easy navigation — whether you're riding during a bright day or a moonless night. And with a rugged waterproof case that resists fuel sprays and UV rays, the zûmo 660 was built for life on the road.
