I am English teacher wanting to work again in England after having been teaching in Thailand for 3 years. I came back from CV recently with an empty wallet and a full CV/Resume thinking getting a job in my home home country would be straightforward. I have been trying to sign with a teaching agency here but have been told i need an English and Thai police clearance certificate (CRB check). For these i have to do the following:

  • Fill in a complete 5 year address history. Not easy when you have travelling and moving around in that time in a country where addresses are are long and difficult.
  • Supply documentation including proof of current address, birth certificate, driving license and more.
  • Pay the UK police around 40 GBP for the pleasure of getting checked.
  • Get 3 sets of fingerprints from the uk police for the purpose of the thai police check which can only be obtained from central police stations.
  • Pay a massive 123 GPB to the police/home office for the 3 sets of fingerprints.
  • Wait up to 3 months for the whole thing

In summary i have do a mountain of paperwork and pay over 200 pounds (around 6000 baht) just to work in my home country just because i am teacher returning from overseas.

I have two questions.

1) Do i need an english or Thai CRB check for returning to thailand?

2) Is there an easier or cheaper way of getting the thai CRB check?

Any stories or advice on this subject will be appreciated

A CRB certificate in the UK can only be obtained by your employer, you can not obtain one yourself. I had one done in the UK as a teacher and my employer (state foundation school) paid for it.

There is no Thai CRB check. You need a certificate from the police Thailand that records all (if any) criminal offences you committed in Thailand. The cheapest way to have done that would have been to get it in Thailand yourself prior to moving back home. You may be able to get a friend/relative to do so, but I think in reality you're in the red tape in the UK and the expenses that brings.

CRB checks are carried out after any absence of 3 months or more from working in the UK schools. Once within a UK school CRB checks are usually 'refreshed' every 3 years. They are always done again if you move schools, take up a position giving more contact with children etc.

Schools in the UK are required to obtain police information from overseas applicants, or as much background information as poss. where some countries do not have good police check systems in place..........such as Nigeria etc.

dam_n right! And anyone wanting to to teacher Children should present an enhanced CRB / clearance. As a Teacher, I'm sure you'd agree. Have you tried the Thai embassy?
