Business news/information about Thailand

Being nearly 190 cm, 100 kilos and bald it’s hard not to see Greg Jorgensen coming. Somehow the Canadian former comedian manages to blend in well in his Bangkok surroundings that he has called home for a decade. Greg arrived on a vacation and liked it so much he never left. Once here he found his cash supplies dwindling and turned to teaching to make ends-meet. Since those early days in Bangkok he has worked as a corporate consultant, in radio/film and now finds himself mostly working as a writer for a trade journal as well as many freelance projects for CNNGo, Big Chilli Magazine, Travel + Leisure and more. All that along with taking groups on exciting bike tours around Bangkok and its environs like Prapadeng. As a Chinatown resident he knows many “off the beaten path” points of interest and loves to write about them at www.gregtodiffer.com , bike to them (which you can see here on YouTube www.youtube.com/bangkokcitybiking) and to talk about them on his weekly show on www.bangkokpodcast.com .

Greg said that he and his friend Tony Joh liked the idea of a weekly podcast about the happenings in Bangkok to get people some “on the ground” information that he was not seeing on the international news. Especially during the “red shirt riots” in March-May 2010 he wanted to let people know that while the riots were serious they were largely confined and most neighborhoods we functioning quite normally. Greg added that he often hears horror stories about foreigners in Bangkok being asked for bribes but that in 10 years here it has never happened to him. He said that with visas and work permits it’s always better to “do things 100% legit and above board”.

When asked about the prices in Bangkok he said that when he arrived a foreigner could reside in the Big Mango easily on 30,000 THB a month but that at least 50,000/month is needed now for a modest expat-friendly lifestyle. He added that that amount can jump significantly if you frequent the bars/restaurants that cater to western travelers. As a recently engaged guy he noted that having a family to care for can even be more expensive here that back home in Calgary.
