The cabinet makes May 16, 2011 a public holiday

The Cabinet has decided to make May 16, 2011, an extra holiday, giving Thais a five-day weekend. The move is aimed at promoting domestic tourism.

According to Ampon Kittiampon, the secretary to the cabinet, the government has declared May16, 2011 an extra public holiday, allowing people to enjoy a five-day break; starting from Friday, May 13th, which is the Royal Ploughing Ceremony Day, all the way through Tuesday, May 17th, the Visakha Bucha Day.

The long holiday will enable the people to spend more time with their families during school holidays; in addition, it will entice people to travel in the country, booting the tourism industry which has been hard hit by violence in the past few years.
