Taxidermy

Featured Replies

Hi TV members.

Does anyone knows where can i find taxidermy animals in Bangkok ?

What kind of animals are you looking for?

In these days of conservation it seems a strange request.

There are 2 kind of taxidermy either the real one or a taxidermist who can replicate the real thing.

I posted a topic earlier looking for a realistic looking tiger and the topic was heading nowhere, i am not looking for the real thing just real close lookalike.

Perhaps looking for a taxidermist should give me some directions.

Here in Chiang Mai there are few places that make hollow plaster casts of animals and other things. They are later painted.

it is the same principle when doing taxidermy. A wire frame is made and covered in modeling clay. When the clay has hardened they use that as a base and make a fiberglass mold of it. Then they stretch the skin over it.

I know there is a long history of things getting stuffed in Thailand, just didn't know dead animals were involved.

There is a shop in Bangkok on Sukhumvit Road, just by the escalator up to Nana BTS station. In the window they have some very realistic lions/tigers for sale, (look real but the owner told me they are fake). But they look very impressive.

Yes i found that shop yesterday, pretty realistic but it has no fur on it. I need one to be really realistic as close to the real thing as possible.

Anyone been to Siam Ocean World ? They have same pretty realistic animals on display some even have fur on it . Are these real dead animals or totally man made material ? Any one knows anything about it ?

Thanks for the lead Ian. I went to look around in JJ weekend market today and was also advise to look at Chiang Mai. Do you happen to have any of these places number so i could call and check them out. Can they produce the fur of the animal as well ?

I happen to visit Singapore and seen a shop down there selling real taxidermied animals/fish/bird. Guess if you can't find real taxidermy specimens in Thailand you either search eBay or make a trip to singapore.

... but it has no fur on it

!!! It definitely had fur when I inspected it! Perhaps it's been eaten by moths?

No, she just shaved that day.

I'm sure those were furs or hairs on something similar. Unless my eyes were playing tricks. Like I said, that's in singapore.

I'm also looking high and low, real stuffed animals in Bangkok. Just can't locate them.

Some more pics I got in my digi camera. That shop is like a mini zoo.

I wasn't looking for the real thing. Just something that is realistic for a display project.

The problem with the real thing is they deteriorate and are usually illegal to transport anywhere.

Thermae in Bangkok?

Well, that also. But what I've seen in the Thermae I wouldn't WANT to transport very far... or for very long.
