Electrical problem forces emergency landing of Buenos Aires-bound Qantas jet

SYDNEY (BNO NEWS) -- An electrical problem has forced a Buenos Aires-bound Qantas plane to make an emergency landing after takeoff at Sydney Airport on Monday, the airline said.

A Qantas spokeswoman said flight QF17 returned to Sydney one hour into the flight to Argentina after a problem in the plane's electrical system and landed without incident around 1:20 p.m. AEDT.

Qantas said in a statement that the Boeing 747 was carrying 199 passengers.

Earlier this month, Qantas grounded its A380 planes after a Sydney-bound flight made a dramatic emergency landing at Singapore's Changi Airport due to an "uncontained engine failure."

Debris from flight 32 fell on Indonesia's Batam Island, near Singapore, after residents reported hearing a loud explosion.

Rolls-Royce on Friday announced that a single faulty component caused the engine failure on the Trent 900-powered A380 Qantas flight.

"This caused an oil fire, which led to the release of the intermediate pressure turbine disc," the company said, adding that it continues to work with the investigating authorities for further analysis.

Qantas has said it is committed to bringing its A380s back into service as soon as possible.
