ไปที่ชอบ

Featured Replies

In reference to a picture of a guy named John dressed up in a suit . . . can someone explain what ที่ชอบ means? A euphemism for something like a brothel maybe?

girl A: แต่งตัวไปไหนอ่ะ

girl B: น้องถามอย่างนั้น ผู้ชายจะตอบว่า ไปที่ชอบ ที่ชอบ คงไม่ต้องอธิบายที่ผู้ชายชอบนะ lol

girl A: ไปที่ชอบๆจอห์นคงไม่เข้าใจ ต้องให้พี่อธิบาย

Here's my best take (don't know how to make the quote thingy work--sorry)

girl A: แต่งตัวไปไหนอ่ะ

Where are (you, John) going?

girl B: น้องถามอย่างนั้น ผู้ชายจะตอบว่า ไปที่ชอบ ที่ชอบ คงไม่ต้องอธิบายที่ผู้ชายชอบนะ lol

If you ask like that, a man is going to say "I'm going someplace I like", I don't need to explain to you the kinds of places men like! lol

girl A: ไปที่ชอบๆจอห์นคงไม่เข้าใจ ต้องให้พี่อธิบาย

If I say (something as indirect as ) "you're going someplace you like", John probably won't understand. You (older sister) will have to explain it (to him)

mikenyork, I already knew what everything meant in the literal sense =P

The thing is, ไปที่ชอบ doesn't exactly mean 'go to a place that John likes'.

I asked around, and it turns out I was right, ไปที่ชอบ is a euphemism for brothel. I'll add that right next to โรงน้ำชา on what to tell the lady when I'm going out whistling.gif

Just want to add one more meaning to the word, ไปที่ชอบ is used when someone died, similar to English " rest in peace"

Yea, I just found out the phrase ไปสู่ที่ชอบ means to die. Perhaps that's like saying 'to go to a better place'?

Are you Brit? The tone of your reply makes me think you must be. We Americans tend to be a little, shall we say, less direct with total strangers. Be that as it may, my key informant says that "ที่เขาซอบ. is not as narrow as brothel. In this context, it clearly means going out for an evening of almost certainly sexual pleasure, but it need not be limited, and the phrase is not specific to, a brothel, per se. With all due respect.

Nah, I'm American (better than Brits hehe). I used the tongue-face thingy so you wouldn't get offended by my comment =P

My apologies to all British subjects who are readers/posters to this forum for my comment earlier to Mr. Farangrak. They were uncalled for and, like most generalizations of this nature, inaccurate, even if it had turned out that the person in question were British (which he isn't, of course). In America, Brits have the reputation of having far better manners than do we Americans. My own personal experience with British ex-pats in Thailand has been, let's say, quite different from my experience with Britons in the US. Nonetheless, it was a stupid thing for me to have said, and I apologize.

(To the Forum gods--know this to be off-topic but hope you will tolerate it in the spirit in which it is offered).offtopic.gif:offtopic:
