Hi guys

There is a domain that I want to buy. Everytime I go to it it says that "the domain is parked, pending renewal or has expired. Please contact the domain provider with questions."

With a little investigation I found out the domain provider and contacted them directly. They told me that the user who had registered it preivously had about 5 days left to renew it and then after that they could move it over to me.

The questions are

1. Will this domain I get from them be on their server...? I dont want it to as I havent found a hosting company yet.

2. How do I go about transferring it...?

3. What should I look out for.?

All I want is the name, owned, by me, not leased to me if that makes sense. This is the first time to do this so if anyone can help me through step by step that would be great

If the owner now does not renew the domain registration then you can register it in your name. Whether you buy it with a hosting package is up to you. A lot of companies will sell you the name and a hosting package for the first year. If you want just the name then just do it that way. You are then free to host it anywhere you like. Depending on what you want for the site there are some very cheap hosting deals about. :D

Ahhh ok. I bought a domain from whois.com recently so I guess the process will be similar with this other company.

I do remember someone saying to me that sometimes you dont actually buy a domain and the domain provider will actually own it on the sly. Is this true and if so what should I look out for..?

By the way it looks to be a Thai domain provider. AppServDomain.com

Also it says the expiry date is not expired on www.whois.net but whois.com says it is and according to server provdier listed on the latter it is too. Again though both list different owners...????!!!!!

When a domain expires it usually goes in to pending delete and then often to auction so if the name is a good one you may have competition.

If no other parties are interested you may be able to pick up the name when it actually drops as a new registration.

You never actually own a domain it is more like leasing with annual renewals. Buying via whois normally means you will have to pay a premium to the current owner.

ahh ok. Im actually gonna be buying it from appservdomain and as far as I know no-one wants it. So buying ti from them is the same as buying the name from whois.com...?

Im sure when buying a domain I have to look out for something regarding/ownerhsip leasing etc but just cant remember what it is......

The fact that the current owner has used appservdomain doesn't mean you need to register the domain via them. Whoever you buy from, make sure they register it in your name. Read the terms and conditions.

If the domain has expired and is available you can buy it from whichever registrar you wish, check out pricing, and you can add your own contact details, in fact if they are incorrect you can actually forfeit the domain.

Once you "own" the domain you can then decide who you want to host it with.If you are going for multiple domains then there are some really good hosting packages with no limit on the number of domains.

So when it expires, is it on the market the same day...? If so Id love to do it through another company.

This is my first time transferring a domain, if that what its called.

This link takes you to the ICANN approved domain life cycle diagram, which may be helpful. If it's still in the 30 days grace period the original holder can still get it back by paying @ 175 USD + re-registration. If it has moved into the last 5 days then it should become available from any registrar at the end of that period, assuming that someone has not pre-ordered it.

nice man. Well the 30 days is over tommorow so I guess the best thing for me to do is wait another 5 days...?

Or should I just buy it from them...? I have a feeling they will bump up the pirce if I do but then again I guess now they know I want it they will anyway

They don't own it so they should not pump up the price...

ahh ok , wow this is confusing. So if I choose I dont have to buy from them...?

You could place what is called a backorder on the domain so at least you are in the mix when the name drops. Not sure if you are too late to do that though.

As I said before, if the name is good/valuable then other people will try to get it.If it is so so then chances are you can simply register it at any of the registrars-check daily.

BTW-there is value in domain names Sex.com sold last week for US$13million, earlier this year Slots.com for US$5.5 million,Dating.com US$1.75 million and many others.

You can register any domain name using any registrar of your choice and long as the domain name is not already registered by someone else.

If the former domain owner has released it, it has the same status as any other domain name that is not registered.

The only thing to look out for if waiting for the domain to become available again is that often domain registrars will renew the domain themselves, even if the customer hasn't renewed it.

They claim that they do this to provide you with security incase you miss the renewal but will often try to sell it back to you, sometimes at auction.

Having told them that you are interested might increase the likely hood of them trying this - however your best bet is probably wait it out, see if it comes available and if not contact the current registrar.

This practice has lost me a domain in the past, but has also just saved one (after no renewal reminders were sent!) so I guess it is fair if used correctly.

Just be aware that it can happen.
