U.S. soldier shot dead in northern Iraq

2010-11-21 23:57:40 GMT+7 (ICT)

BAGHDAD (BNO NEWS) -- A U.S. soldier was shot and killed by a suspected insurgent in northern Iraq on Sunday, the U.S. military said.

A statement from U.S. Forces - Iraq said the American soldier had died as a result of wounds sustained from enemy small arms fire during advisory operations in northern Iraq. Other details about the incident were not immediately released.

"The name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin and release by the Department of Defense," the statement added.

The fatality raises the total number of U.S. troops killed in Iraq so far this year to 59, considerably lower than the 149 U.S. fatalities last year. Most of the soldiers who died this year died as the result of non-hostile incidents.

Remember when this wouldn't have been news because it was happening every day?

Directly related to the amount of troops moved out of Iraq....

Removing troops from foreign lands where they are not wanted may save US lives in more than one way.

Then again.....

What you actually need to know is....

How many were there & how many now remain....

It is public record as Mr Obama took great pride in claiming most were being pulled out. :bah:

You would then want to look at the ratio of deaths vs totals in country....That is what your fishing for yes?

But also realize of the remaining troops that their basic purpose is now as advisers & trainers...As non combat troops their death rate should be much lower.

It will be relative....

But better yet..............My guess is when all US Soldiers leave Iraq....No more US Soldiers will be killed there ...as the result of hostile or non-hostile events ;)

The "advisers and trainers" are the same people as the soldiers and there are still tens of thousands there. I'm sure to the average insurgent on the street they don't care what the US soldier is called or what his offical job duties are, they still want him dead. As you yourself say, they are foreign troops who aren't wanted there.
