Police warn demonstrating Yellows to be peaceful

By The Nation

The People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) will not be allowed to stay overnight in front of Parliament during their protest today against the Constitution amendments, the Metropolitan Police said.

About 1,500 policemen would be deployed to handle the demonstration, which was expected to see 3,000-4,000 people participating, said Metropolitan Police spokesman Piya Uthayo.

They must protest in a peaceful manner under the law and should not obstruct traffic flow, he said.

The yellow-shirted PAD called a massive protest at Parliament today against the government's proposal to amend the military-sponsored Constitution. The amendment was against the people's will as it only benefited politicians, they said.

Bangkok is still under the state of emergency enforced since April when the red shirts held huge protests against the government.

The Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES) announced five rules to control demonstrations. The rules prohibit protesters from blocking traffic routes or Parliament's gates, threatening others with any words or signs, using amplifiers or insulting the Monarchy.

Military reinforcements will be called up in case of emergency or if the situation gets out of hand, Piya said.

PAD coordinator Suriyasai Katasila said the group would begin its protest in front of Parliament by 8am today and would comply with the CRES rules.

"We won't block Parliament's gates, but I cannot guarantee whether it would affect traffic in the area as I expect up to 10,000 people to join the rally," he said.

The protest would end within a day and be conducted in accordance with the law, he added.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva instructed that the weekly Cabinet meeting be postponed from today to Thursday as he wanted ministers to concentrate on the Parliament debate.

Red-shirt leader Jatuporn Promphan urged members of the red groups to stay away from PAD protest sites in order to prevent any clashes between the two rival groups.

"The red shirts should not go there. Let's enjoy watching the two pro-dictator groups [the government and the PAD] fight each other. It is not our game, we should not get in the middle of their conflict," he said.

Constitutional ammendment is the big one and could lead to anything

Expect the PTP to also walk out if they dont get the chance to table a version that would mean the end of all charges against their main man.

Whatever way you look at it Thai politics seems to be heading for a dead end with no player (and there are mroe than 2) being willing to accept a losing outcome for their group. Interesting to observe but....

Perhaps some of the red supporters that post on this forum would like to enlighten me as to who this "Dictator" is that K Jatuporn eludes to.

I'm not sure I'm clear on this point. Why does do the PAD feel that the constitutional ammendments are 'military backed' and why do they only benefit the politicians?

I can make some assumptions naturally, but what is the correct version?

Thanks

They are opposed to "the government's proposal to amend the military-sponsored Constitution." They are not saying the amendments are military backed. They like the 2007 constitution and don't want any of it changed, no matter how bad it is.

Thank you for the clarity here, it is interesting that the PAD wishes to keep the 'military' constitution. These are also the same group that wanted to limit people's right to vote, especially those from the rural areas, if I remember correctly.

Changing the constitution will not make much difference in the day-to-day lives of the millions that feel disinfranchised by the PAD elite leaning tendancies.

Food, Clothing, Work, Education, these seem to be what the masses need, another change the charter that will not directly assist the masses, does appear to be a bit of a waste of time. I do hope, at least the changes being proposed will allow for more inclusion and more clarity in the government process.....

This is Thailand however.......

Thanks Again.

You need some clarity there, as well. The proposal you speak of was merely a discussion point that was shelved ages ago.

How do they feel about the Red Elite leaning tendencies?

Those necessity issues are precisely what the government has been working very hard for.

The changes to the constitution asked for by Red Leader Weng would allow for more inclusion in that those found guilty of electoral fraud and banned from politics would be re-instated.

ok - red shirt, street take over, terrorist leaders are in jail., except a couple of golden spooners..

are any yellow shirt, airports and govt house take over, terrorists in jail?

facts are facts

---you, who side with with either side, should be examined for signs of signs intelligence.

though it's been documented that both sides have computer rooms with paid 'posters'

------------

here is what probably happened? the pm has already cancelled the amendments to make Sondhi happy,

so??? they said do the demonstration, anyway, to let the govt show how 'stern' they will be, on yellows, too...

equally just, except bullets won't be loaded

this is where a few dupe, pawn yellows might get roughed up by the police, but NEVER the leaders!

>>>>it's all about mobster politics fighting for the noses in pig troughs, it's THAT simple!

the only thing that could change it is free discussion of the faulty and convulted systems..

aint gonna happen for decades, mebbe centuries,,not as long as censorship and false lm rules the day..

elections are a time bomb, other things which can't be mentioned are trip wires, now the collapse of Ireland will send ripples of financial desperation around the World that will whip Corruption ridden, despotic regimes into even more chaos and turmoil...

the future of Thailand? sadly it's gonna get ugly and uglier.

disagree, but then stay tuned to upcoming news, then still disagree,,, DUH

An interesting "opinion piece" by the former editor of the the other paper who basically says that all three constitutional amendments are unlikely to be agreed upon for various reasons according to differing political viewpoints and that therefore the PAD are wasting their time demonstrating. Most importantly of all he comes to the conclusion that all of the amendments are politically self serving and none benefit the interest of the populace.

Same as it ever was................

PAD Leader Chamlong has announced that the PAD rally, which, btw, has continued to remain peaceful, will end today after the joint Parliament session has finished voting on the first readings of the proposed Constitution amendments.

If any of them pass, PAD will then decide on future actions.

The first one voted on today was Red Shirt Leader Weng's Amendment.

It was rejected by the Parliamentarians and will not move further along in the process.

Did the PTP walk out after the amendment was rejected?

The other paper is stating that the single constituency amendment passed the first reading. So I guess we can expect some "future actions".
