Hi

My wife's daughter (7 yr old) currently lives with my wife's parents in Thailand. Recently one of the grandparents died so there is a likelyhood that we will be looking to bring my wife's daughter over to the UK.

I have had a look at the UK Border Agency website and my understanding is (though I maybe wrong) no settlement visa has to be initially applied for, just that you go to the relevant British Diplomatic post and obtain permission which is known as "Entry clearance" then once in the UK settlement can be applied for. Is this correct?

If so is there a specific form that would need to be completed? I cannot locate one?

Any help much appreciated

Entry Clearance is the process of being cleared for entry into the UK, or at least being cleared for travel to the UK. The Visa Vignette is placed in the passport to show that entry clearance has been approved.

If your wife's daughter needs to join her in the UK, because of the death of the grand parent, then entry clearance will need to be applied in the form of a settlement visa, it will need to be applied for in Thailand and will will cost 37,500 Baht.

As Paul ( Thai Visa Express ) says, your wife will need to show that she has had sole responsibilty for her daughter, even though her daughter has been living with family in Thailand. Often this is where an application fails. She ( with your assistance ) will need to show such things as financial support, emotional support, parental care ( even from a distance ), and that your wife has has a say in important daily decisions for her daughter.

Just a basic question - when your wife applied for her own visa, did she mention her daughter on the VAF as required, and did she give any details of where the child lives, with whom, and how she was supported ? Applicants often ask why such information is needed when they apply for their own settlement visas, and this is one of the reasons, to confirm the realationship, etc, in the event of future applications.
