Large cargo plane crashes at airport in northern Mexico

2010-11-25 04:25:29 GMT+7 (ICT)

MONTERREY, MEXICO (BNO NEWS) -- Plumes of smoke were rising from an area close to an airport in northern Mexico on Wednesday after a plane had crashed there, authorities said.

Mexican media reported that a large cargo plane belonging to the Mexican Air Force had crashed at approximately 2.45 p.m. local time as it was taking off from Monterrey International Airport. Five people were believed to have been killed, television reports said.

The airport said it suspended its operations because smoke from a fire at the crash site was preventing planes from taking off or landing.

Earlier this year, on April 13, seven people were killed when AeroUnion Flight 302 - an Airbus A300 - crashed on approach to Monterrey International Airport.
