My husband and are are late in making plans to travel to Thailand beaches in mid December. We have confirmed reservations on Ko Ngai for the middle of our trip, and Ao Nang for the end. We're trying to find somewhere to get to to spend four days. Have been looking at Phuket and Ko Phi Phi both of which seem overrun. Any ideas from folks for a place with wonderful snorkling and swimming?

I haven't bee to Phi Phi in several years, but even back then, it was pretty over run...lots of backpackers.

Don't give up on Phuket. The main beaches are pretty crowded, but some of the ones up North are pretty darn nice. Nai Thon is not too crowded. Bang Tao has some nice areas, especially at the northern end. The middle is a lot of high end resorts. I've not been all the way up, but have heard they are quite nice and relatively isolated.

My favourite place is Koh Maa off the NW coast of Koh Phangnan.

Different choices of resort and to see the coral - just swim off the beach! Chill out place. B)

(Good sunsets too, but not usually in December - sorry :realangry:)

snorkeling? Koh Tarotao, Koh Similan, Koh Kood

All great places. The Similans are fantastic. I think the only accommodations there camping on the main island in that national park? I went there on a liveaboard dive boat and it was absolutely fantastic.

If ya have 4 days see how your schedule is for Koh Phangan for the famous Full Moon Party,it's A blast.

Interesting if you are young and want to drink and dance all night. If not, best to avoid the place. It's not for everybody. I love KPN, but avoid it around the FMP. Too many publically displayed body piercings make me uncomfortable! :(

Similan and Surins are camping only.

Kradan, Tarutao, Rork, Adang also have camp grounds. You can camp free on Ngai if you know how and where.

I only camp any more. Not step foot in a bungalow.

Thanks for the info! I also love camping, but getting too old for a tent! I need my ensuite bungalow! :whistling:
