Somali-American to be arraigned in Oregon terror plot

2010-11-30 06:11:32 GMT+7 (ICT)

PORTLAND, OREGON (BNO NEW) — A Somali-American teenager who was arrested last week after FBI agents thwarted his terror plot to detonate a bomb in Portland, Oregon, is set to be arraigned, prosecutors said on Monday.

Mohamed Osman Mohamud, 19, had organized for a van to explode during Portland's Christmas-tree-lighting ceremony on Friday, but FBI agents were able to discover the terror plot beforehand, delivering fake explosives to Mohamud, who used them to fill up a van that he parked near the tree on Friday.

According to reports, Mohamud's father had informed police of the possibility months before the incident.

After the arrest, a possible arson ignited an Islamic center in Corvallis, Oregon on Sunday, which Mohamud occasionally worshiped at. It is still unsure whether the incident is related to the arrest, but authorities are currently investigating the incident.

Mohamud is scheduled to be arraigned on a charge of attempting to use a weapon for mass destruction, which could send him prison for the rest of his life if found guilty.
