Just became affiliate of 'LIGATT Security International', I don't post this to spam my sweet link (I won't even post the link) but because the information they provide is interesting. I remember a similar question few weeks ago on 'how to locate my stolen PC'.

Hundreds of thousands of laptops are stolen every year during vehicle or home break-ins; taken while unattended at airports, dorm rooms and many other locations. With so much important information being stored on computers today, recovery is only one part of the process. Retrieving personal files and photos while stopping access to private information is even more important. That's where LocatePC comes in!

LocatePC is a hidden piece of software that gives you access to your computer remotely over the Internet, regardless of where the computer was lost or stolen. When LocatePC installs, it will hide itself on your hard drive in different areas each time. It will never be named the same thing on each computer and is nearly impossible to remove.

Features:

- LocatePC allows you to remotely access your computer regardless of location without the thief's knowledge.

- You can covertly download and delete files by name, location or file type.

- If you have a built in camera on your computer, LocatePC will take snap shots of the thief.

- Have the computer shut down every time it is turned on.

- An email or text message can be sent to your cell phone or email address every time the IP address changes.

- The key logging tool records everything that the thief types. From every email sent or received to IM conversations, websites visited, and any usernames and passwords they type, everything is captured. Many times this information contains personally identifiable data such as name, address, phone number, etc. The information can be used by law enforcement and significantly increase the chance of recovery.

- Text to Screen allows you to send messages to your laptop screen. The Thief can not remove the message.

- 24 Hour Support via Telephone, Email and Text Message.

I think it's interesting knowledge many people don't know about...

You're kidding right? The first thing any 'smart' thief would do is disable internet or remote access on the stolen machine. After stealing your data, he/she then wipe the entire HDD using data shredding or forensic software.

Get your laptop stolen, chances are you'll never see it again.

I kind of agree, This software have exactly those components that you really don't want if you are careful about your data.

Encrypt your data if you want to keep it secret and have a decent backup system. Make sure you know what your software is doing and avoid proprietary crap like this...

I have to disagree with both you chaps. I would guess that 90% odd of thefts are from stupid opportunist thieves who wouldn't know how to disable the internet if they wanted to. They tend to just sell them on to somebody quickly who then sells them on for a profit. I would prefer if this type of thing was on a partition that was still safe if the new owner decided to format and reinstall the OS or even in the Bios. I can remember years ago having a similar thing on my home PC. It was set to dial a certain telephone number every day so if it was stolen and connected to the internet it would dial your number and you could find out the number it was dialling from via caller id.

I still think though that having this is better than nothing.

Definitely worth a look

If someone else put this software on YOUR computer it's a total identity theft toolkit.I wouldn't want this software near my machine.

Encrypt, backup and if you are worried... take out insurance on your laptop.
