A friend has reported that over on pajerosportsociety they're discussing a shiftlock problem. Apparently its a problem with all pajero 2.5's. There is some sort of timing delay during a gear shift when cruising downhill at around 30km which causes the car to 'jerk'.

Apparently they're banding together to get Mitsu to do something about it.

If anyone can read Thai or comprehend G-translate, here is one discussion.

I would think this would be a major problem necessitating a re-call?????

It's not a shift "lock" but a shift "shock", not all models are affected.

Mine was affected when new (8 months ago). Spoke to the right people, got the issue elevated, had an engineer visit my house and upload a new program into the ECU - problem solved.

Sorry, should point out that the solution is to simply ask Mitsu to update your ECU program - it takes about 15 mins and will be free. Only do it if you actually have the problem though - It would be hard to imagine that newer models would still be going out with the old AT code.

Thanks for that clarification, good to know its easy fixex. How was it actually effecting the car, MRO?

Sometimes when coasting at 30-40km/hr, when you touched the throttle the AT would change gears with a "thunk". Nothing serious, just a clunky change, but still inexcusable - the real issue was that it was embarrassing when you had friends on board and it happened, because they'd always ask "what was that?".

In fact that's how I got got Mitsu to take the problem seriously - by naming some of the people that the car had caused the Mitsubishi brand embarrassment with.

if i m not wrong it is about Electronic control unit/ Engine control unit.

Apparently it was a clash between the AT program and the A/C compressor activation, that only happened when a series of special conditions happened simultaneously.

And I guess the way to check if we have that updated ECU program would be to ask Mitsu? I might have to do some cruising at 30-40k.

The problem was resolved in May - so if yours was manufactured after that chances are it's not affected. No need to purposely look for the issue, if yours is susceptible, you will have noticed it at least once for every 100km driven.

Waaah! I had this problem with my car here in Manila -- first couple of visits to the dealer, they told me this was "normal" with a 4x2,

On my 3rd visit for 10K check up, they understood the problem and my impression was they said it was something in the tranny that needed to be tightened, either wAY, they fixed it and i never experienced the problem again..
