Drill Hoes In S.Steel

Featured Replies

Does anyone know a machine shop who will drill 3 holes in a small S.Steel flange ? Simple job for a shop with a vertical miller – e.g. Bridgeport ?

I don't know if they have a vertical miller, but the stainless steel shop on Thepprasit made me some stainless steel flanges that had holes in them. I think the 'Thai' way might be to use a welding torch to add holes. Drills sold here seem to be softer than the stainless steel.

Anyway check with a stainless steel shop about adding holes.

How thick is your ss flange? The trick in drilling ss with a regular drill bit is keeping the rpm down.

But I still buy my drill bits when I am in the US or UK as I agree that most that are available locally are sh!te.

There's a S/S workshop on the Sukumvit Rd east side between Pattaya Klang and Pattaya Tai, they fabricated me some brackets earlier this year.

They're worth a visit to help you out, you can spot them by all the S/S frames that are outside the front of there shop entrance.

Thanks team.

The flange is only 4mm thick but joins onto another flange on an electric motor - which is why the holes have to be precise. Note holes themselves are only 4mm dia.

With a vertical mill it is easy to hold the flange in a machine vice which is bolted to the bed and drill the holes.
