I'm in the market for one of those pre-built salas so common around Thailand .. and would like one built of teak is not too expensive. I have seen them in past years in the teak furniture market in Denchai, but never priced one. The size should be small enough to fit on a truck, but large enough to seat 4-6 people.

So I'm wondering if someone might know .. or have a telephone number.

I keep seeing them coming into town from out Sven's way. Someone out there is building them, but not sure who. Maybe he does.

Yeah, they are building these salas here in Huay Sak. If you go HW 1020 towards Toeng, Huay Sak is about 15 km on the road, you pass the trafficlight and go about 500 m and you see the salas on your left hand side. I have not a clue about the price but I see quite often they deliver on a little trailer behind a pickup.

On the road to Mae Sai at Mae Chan , the shop there does them and bamboo ones as well and bamboo furniture.

price for the bamboo salas are about 5-8,000 bht.

Anything in teak is pricey , bugs love young teak to eat, so make sure its treated if you buy, old teak is more expensive. Try an alternative hard wood.

I designed and built one 3 years ago. all teak except for the support legs, must be hard wood.

Hope you like the pic..oh it cost from memolry close to 100K

I bought mine at the big trade fair here, I think they were in January out near the airport.

It was made at the prison workshops. Not teak though, they delivered it in sections and assembled it on site.

I'd imagine they would have them on display at the flower show.

I can get salas made from bamboo or woods other than teak from a shop a few kliks down the road .. but not teak.

@johninbkk - Really beautiful sala. Looks like a great house as well. But I think a bit over my budget. :)

Today I checked the salas. First, the guy has moved his production so it is now on your right hand about 500 m before the trafficlights coming from CR.

He is not making from teak but from some local hardwood.

He has many different types and you can probably design your own.

I took a couple of photos:

Price between 17.000 baht and 20.000 baht.

I also got some photos of his production.

I scanned them here (the bad quality is NOT from my scanner):

Hi Sven,

Thanks for going to the trouble of taking those photos and getting the info/prices. Those are some nice designs. I think the delivery charge to Pak Thongchai might price those out of my range. For teak I might bite that bullet, But I can get the salas made of local hardwoods at Pak Chong.

Thanks again.

Another line of thought here.

I build a lot of stuff. I never use wood. There are just too many items on the place that have become housing and cafeterias for the bugs. I build everything out of steel and Smartwood. With the proper initial coat of paint, the Smartwood will last until I am gone. The steel will occasionally need to be repainted but it will outlast me as well.

There are lots of sizes, colors and styles of Smartwood available. The rougher wood-grain style adds a nice touch to any projects that need that "woodsy" look.

Smartwood is easy to work with and is easily attached to the steel frames and uprights, which can also be covered with the narrower Smartwood boards, completely hiding the steel.

If you need to see an example of how it looks when put together and painted properly, stop by my house or visit the new displays that Home-Mart is currently finishing in the CR showroom. I think you will find the finished price quite a bit below that of a wooden structure of the same style and you won't be tearing it down and burning it a few years later.

You can, of course, buy the liquid wood treatment (Chaindrite) to keep the bugs away, but from my experience, the wood needs to be treated often. The product seems to evaporate fairly quickly and new evidence of the bug population begins to appear. The treatments and the battle are too much labor for my liking.

The wife recently bought, against my advice, two of the huge, rough-cut wood tables that are popular here. The products were finished very nicely and were supposedly treated for pests. HA! We are now the proud owners of two thriving bug metropolises and I can't get even the spray Chaindrite far enough into the things to slow the population.

Did you consider buying the teak yourself and getting it made locally?

They're not hard to make, any local carpenter should be able to knock one up to your own specifications.

Teak, by the way, is bug resistant, which is the reason it was so popular for ship building in days gone by.

Nasty cold, soulless stuff, have fun chipping the rust off over the next umpteen years.

Look at all the timber in my house, lovely warm wood with rich deep colours.

Never a bug near it, a light sandpaper and a coat of varnish every three or four years keeps it like brand new.

Not really. I would have to go shopping for teak planks which may well be illegal wood. Then if I get nabbed transporting them ..

I think I know that the reasons bugs don't like teak is because of its natural oils. That's also why it was used extensively in deck planking for seagoing vessels .. because it wouldn't get water logged and rust the steel to which it was mounted.

From Wikipedia: "The country that accounts for nearly one third of the total teak production of the world is "Myanmar"." Source teak

About steel:

I could easily build my own if I bought a MIG welder and a cutoff saw. I owned and operated a small precision metal-fab shop for many years. But I just can't see a steel sala in my back yard .. even a nicely powder coated one .. even a stainless one (no chipping off rust for umpteen years)

I've been looking at some sala's and they're all in the

20 000 Baht range. The problem I've found is that they

have a lot nails rather than screws and as such seem

to be a bit fragile.

Think I'll give the Trade Fair a visit next week to see if there

are any stronger, more solids ones available.

I'd rather pay extra and get a quality one that will last.

But what?

I went to the Trade Fair a few days ago but was

told there is another one this month where sala's

are made by the prison workshop.

Will check it out.

I've got one made in the prison I bought 6 years ago. It's a beauty but it was over 20K.

Lets us know a bit more about this new trade fair when you go.

I realise this is an old thread, but for anyone who is interested,

recently saw a teak sala in a shop opposite BigC. On the same

side as Central, about 200 meters up the road going towards Mae Sai.

They're priced as 50 000 Baht and usually only stock one and then

replace it with another once sold.
