Thai police arrest 45 Sri Lankan migrants

BANGKOK, December 8, 2010 (AFP) - Thai authorities said Wednesday they had arrested 45 migrants from Sri Lanka in the latest of a series of crackdowns in recent months.

The Sri Lankans, who were rounded up at a crowded apartment in a Bangkok suburb, appear to be economic migrants hoping to travel to a third country, said Police Major General Manu Mekmok, of Thailand's Immigration Bureau.

"They either overstayed their visas or entered illegally," he said.

In October Thai authorities detained more than 200 Tamil migrants from Sri Lanka in two separate operations, but they later released some who were able to present valid travel documents.

Some reports at the time suggested those Sri Lankans hoped to travel to Canada, whose government welcomed news of their arrest.

Almost 500 Tamil refugees arrived in Canada in August aboard a cargo ship which reportedly spent 90 days travelling from Thailand before police boarded it in Canadian waters and piloted it ashore in western Canada.

Sri Lanka's crackdown on the Tamil Tigers, which ended a lengthy civil war last year, has resulted in a flood of people seeking asylum in other countries.

Alongkorn wins court battle against Thai Rak Thai

Commerce Minister Alongkorn Ponlaboot Wednesday won a decade-long court battle by unequivocally securing three favourable decisions on his libel charge raised by the defunct Thai Rak Thai Party.

The Supreme Court upheld a lower court's verdict and a subsequent appellate decision to acquit Alongkorn.

The litigation began in 2000 after the then newly-formed party of fugitive ex-prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra sued Alongkorn for libel.

As Democrat and office holder, Alongkorn cried foul to Thai Rak Thai campaigning tactics. He posed a series of questions calling attention to whether the party was trying to grab power by buying votes and engineering the defection of MPs from rival parties.

The Criminal Court and the appellate review found Alongkorn not guilty due to the lack of malicious intent.

Phuket King's Cup Regatta crewman dies

A crewman on a Phuket King's Cup Regatta racing yacht was found dead on board the vessel, at anchor off Phuket's Kata beach, on Wednesday.

The man is believed to be a Canadian who was an expat resident of Phuket. Police are still on board the vessel, but there are no indications of suspicious circumstances.

It is thought the man probably died of a heart attack.

The man attended the after-race King's Cup party last night in Kata then headed back to the boat, where he was the crew member delegated to sleep on board.
