Failing To Stop .. Oops

Recommended Posts

OK, here's the story.

Friday (the Queens birthday), I'm tootling up the Don Muang tollway, about 80k's in the left lane, loads of stuff belting past. I've been caught for speeding here before so I'm taking no risks.

Arrived at the Rangsit turning (toll closed, free), the Boys in Brown have their usual 'public holiday' checkpoint set up.

Now, I know I've commited no offence. I'm halfway past the cop (well he was about 3 feet in front of me) when he signals to stop, I honestly thought he was signalling to the vehicle behind, it was only when looking in the mirror I see, no other vehicle and a rather perplexed looking cop. Far too late to stop now and there's no way I'm reversing up the off ramp to get my 1000 Baht 'fine'.

So, am I to expect a visit from the powers that be? In the UK they would be waiting for me when I got home, but then again I would have got plenty of notice to stop and I would be stopped for a reason. Is there a Thai equivalent of the 'PNC'?

Comments anyone

Slightly off topic but worth a tell.

A fellow I know worked in Africa and used to drive to work. Police roadblocks were common. One day he was stopped and they asked to open the boot of his car. While searching the boot the cop put his machine gun down to make the the job easier. Then shut the boot forgetting his gun. On driving off the fellow said he saw in his mirror a policeman jumping up and down and waving his arms about. He didn't think much of it till he was stopped at the next roadblock and they asked him to open his boot. The rest of the story is not pleasant.

Agree an MC cop would have got you if they wanted you. I had a taxi (when black plate private cars ran from Don Mong) try to outrun a stop coming into the city one time and sure enough a cop with a big smile was alongside us as we were doing over 100k along the railway track - driver pulled over and surrendered DL for later fine. Meanwhile I had visions of gunfire any moment as we were being chased. :o

I did a similar thing at the junction of Soi 71 and Suk Road a few weeks ago. I stopped at the red light and watched the cops stopping all the motorbikes! My car has very dark windows which is great because the cops cannot see that I am farang = stopped fewer times.

Anyway, I look at the red light, then I look out of the window. There is a cop with his nose pressed up against the window and he has just realised that I'm farang. I look at the traffic light again and it's green! Off I go, with the cop just about to raise him arm to tell me sto stop. I must say he did look surprised!

I've found from experience that if I think I have committed no traffic offence, I look steadily ahead when signalled to stop by a cop and just keep on driving, pretending I haven't seen them. They have never come after me, (presumably because I have not committed any offence....)

Yes you have. I am informed by my local friendly traffic police that windows you cannot see through from the outside are illegal :o

My understanding is that black windows are illegal but tinted are ok. The tint is just enough to make me look 'Thai' if you don't get too close :o

The very first time was the best. Followed some customers in brand new Benzes (who says Thai are poor?) Although, I had asked to drive a bit slowly, they went down Sukhumvit and a right turn into Ratchada at Asok with around 90 km/h.

Signal just had turned to red and a policemen hold his bat in front of my window.

I used my horn, my flash lights and the gas pedal.

He, I saw in the mirrors pulled his walkie-talkie to alarm his colleagues.

Yeah, 8 of them standing around Singha-beer house area, all with their backs to us. Guess, 3 speeding cars in a convoi was looking too official.
