Car explosions kill one, injure two in Stockholm

2010-12-12 04:04:49 GMT+7 (ICT)

STOCKHOLM (BNO NEWS) -- Two cars exploded on Saturday in downtown Stockholm, the capital and the largest city of Sweden, killing one person and injuring two others, a police spokesperson said.

Police spokesperson Petra Sjolander told CNN that "one explosion happened at the intersection of Drottninggatan and Olof Palmes Gata. This was the car that exploded multiple times." The second car exploded at the intersection of Drottninggatan and Bryggargatan streets.

According to Sjolander, local police don't know what caused the explosions at about 5 p.m. local time that killed one man and slightly injured two others, and if the two explosions were linked.

"We don't want to speculate" whether the explosions were intentional or an accident, she said, adding that one of the cars caught fire "following a series of explosions which could be those of gas canisters" inside the vehicle.

The identities of the victims have not been released.

The Swedish TT news agency and police said they received e-mail threats against the Swedish people 10 minutes before the explosions, which killed one person and injured two others on Saturday. The writer of the e-mail mentions the presence of Swedish troops in Afghanistan and a Swedish cartoonist who depicted the Prophet Mohammed,.

Sweden has 500 troops stationed in Northern Afghanistan at the joint Sweden/Finland base. It is relatively peaceful there with no armed confrontations. It is not a Taliban zone. . The troops are actively involved in mine clearing and guard and assist the NGOs involved in the reconstruction efforts (schools, health clinics, water wells etc.) Hardly, a hostile activity or meriting a terrorist attack.

Oh really!

That’s not what we are hearing from our troops. We hear about escalating violence and cries for more troops, and better and more weapons. So far, out of the small contingency of 500, we have lost 5, and the public sentiment to participate in this war is at an all time low. A clear majority of Swedes wants us to leave Afghanistan asap and not cooperate or join with NATO in the future.

Hopefully we will pull out next year.

Btw the tragic incident in Stockholm was an act by a lonely disturbed individual and all parties agree that we will not let us get dragged into any escalations.

A lonely disturbed individual who went to the Middle East to train for Jihad.

I doubt Sweden will send more troops because of this. I hope they don't encourage further attacks on other countries by pulling them out like Spain did.

AFP – Sweden on Sunday probed two bomb blasts that killed a person in central Stockholm as a "terrorist crime", as an Al-Qaeda-linked website claimed one of its militants had carried out the suicide attack.

Saturday's explosions -- a suspected suicide attack and separate blast -- targeted Christmas shoppers in a busy pedestrian quarter of the Swedish capital. Two people were also injured. "We are opening an investigation into a terrorist crime," Anders Thornberg, head of the security unit of domestic intelligence Saepo, said Sunday. "We suspect that it was a suicide attack."

Meanwhile an Islamist website called Shoumoukh al-Islam published a photograph of the man it said was the attacker. "It is our brother, mujahid Taymour Abdel Wahab, who carried out the martyrdom operation in Stockholm," it said. The photograph showed a man in dark glasses and Western clothes.

The same photo was published in Swedish newspaper Expressen on Sunday with the face blurred. An official for the paper's photo department told AFP that there was "quite enough evidence" to say that it was the picture of the attacker. But a Saepo spokeswoman, Carolina Ekeus, refused to comment on the Islamist website's claim. About 10 minutes before Saturday's blasts, the TT news agency and Saepo received an email, which included audio files in both Swedish and Arabic, in which the suspected attacker addresses "Sweden and the Swedish people." "Our acts will speak for themselves," TT quoted the message as saying. "Now your children, your daughters and your sisters will die as our brothers, our sisters and our children are dying." The message referred to the Swedish military presence in Afghanistan and to Swedish artist Lars Vilks, who has been the object of constant threats since his drawing of the Muslim prophet with the body of a dog was first published in 2007. In the English version of the e-mail sent to TT and Saepo, obtained by AFP, the man addresses his wife and children, and apologizes for lying to them. "It wasn't easy to keep secrets from you, my travels to the Middle East wasn't for business, it was for jihad," he says. "Accept me as a martyr, and my request from you is to pray." "And to all hidden mujaheddin in Europe and especially Sweden it is now the time to strike, even if you have only a knife to strike with, and I know that you have more than that," the message ends.

I watch this on France24 news and was glad to see and applaud the large number of Muslims in Sweden that came out in protest denouncing the people that do this in the name of there religion and a head cleric from a Mosque in Sweden denouncing this act as not the acts of true Muslins, these statement should be made more public and questioned to Muslims countries worldwide.

I think that is EXACTLY what the people in the West need to see more of - regular Muslims protesting against the jihadis. It's one thing to hear how they are mostly peace-loving, it's another to see it.
