My wife underwent an operation in the UK back in 2006 to reattach two tendons in her left hand following an accident while practising her Wing Chun. The op solved the problem and she's been fine until recently, where she tripped and fell. Her instincts to block her fall unfortunately resulted in her landing on the same wrist and we suspect she has once again ripped the same tendons. She is in constant pain and cannot freely move three of her fingers (thumb and index finger are OK) and outwardly, while all looks fine, she is unable to use her hand normally at all.

She went to Samitivey Hospital to the sports injury department and initially was happy with her consultant who confirmed no bone or nerve damage and took an X-ray. This however did not show which tendon(s) were causing the problem and this is where the doctor began to get vague and prescribed anti-inflammatory tablets and muscle relaxants for a fortnight, before she was due to come back for another check.

We couldn't see the point of taking these drugs as we feel the problem is physical and she needs an operation similar to the previous one in the UK. We are therefore looking for a second opinion from an English speaking specialist who can determine exactly what the damage is and perform any rectification works in Bangkok. We have no medical insurance but will make funds available to pay privately as necessary.

Can anyone suggest a good consultant in the area and perhaps indicate how much we're looking at for an op requiring a general anaesthetic and skilled surgeon. Last time she didn't need to spend the night in hospital, but the op can be quite complex and take a few hours.

Thanks for any advice.

Dr. Panupan, who heads up the microsurgery team at Siriraj, has private practice at Phytathai 2 Hospital Sundays 9 Am to I think 11 or 12, also Thursday evenings at Chao Phya Hospital.

He is the foremost hand specialist in Thailand.

Call to confirm he will be there as sometimes he goes abroad to conferences and the like.

I know it's not really related, but a mate of mine had to fly to NZ to reattach a bicep after he severed it in an accident as there was not a specialist in Bangkok that could do the job.
