I am a 49 year old Canadian man who has been living and teaching English here in Thailand for the past 10 years. Recently I found myself in some financial problems as we all do sometimes due to various reasons (none of which involve woman, whisky or sin).

I had worked for a school franchise that I am not allowed to mention here but they are the biggest franchise in Thailand with a 'PURPLE" logo, on 2 other occasions in the north and the actual franchise school was great but all these franchises are leased for 460,000 baht per year and they have no control over what goes on. They are controlled and policed by the head office near Victory Monument Bangkok. That is who signs the paychecks, does the hiring, firing etc. I took the jobs to get out of Bangkok and live in the Thai type of country living.

I recently took a job at one of the franchises in Future Park Rangsit which is still outside of Bkk and again the Manager, staff etc there is great BUT the head office in Bkk still governs them.

I was told that if hired I would receive a 1 year contract, non "B" Visa and work permit which the Visa would not be paid for but the work permit would be however after my interview in the head office in Bkk, they said they could only give me a month by month contract which is unsatisfactory however again I need the money and job (and they knew it), so I took it.

Well I'm into my second month now and still do not have the contract in my hand. My tourist visa will expire on December the 26th and they are not even sure if they will have the paperwork ready to process my "B" visa. Payday is not until the last day of December and I have absolutely no money right now. I asked if they could pay me early so I wouldn't have to pay 6 days overstay (3000 baht) but was told "NO". Today is Monday and today and tomorrow is my scheduled days off and I am Diabetic and my insulin will finish after my morning shots. I take 2 in the morning and 2 at night. I asked to borrow enough money to at least by insulin and some food so I will not die and the answer again was simply "NO". So I don't even have the money to take a mini bus back to work on Wednesday. Now this is not their responsibility but morally you would think that most human beings would help if they could and they can. I have already worked 12 days this month so it is just money owed.

I started the job on November 13th and when I received my salary it was 2000 baht shy and when I called the head office I was told by the Director that the reason was because I had only worked for 13 days. Now this is not legal according to Thai Labor Laws and when I called them they even told me that he was wrong and if I wanted they would call him and tell him he needs to pay but as I told him I need this job until I at least get a full months salary and he agreed that yes if they did call I would likely be fired. He said that when I finish with this institute just to call him and he will get my money back.

Now I must mention that the Head office is run by a guy named xxxxx (The Head Director), and he is the one who makes all of these decisions etc. He knew I had little money when he gave me this job. His attitude is "no problems, we can send another teacher to replace you". Now, he claims to be Buddhist but as anyone knows a true Bt could never let a man starve or die if they could do anything to help and as mentioned before this is the case yet he is willing to let me starve and also not help me get insulin. Again, Legally not obliged to take responsibility for my actions but I have earned the money I am asking for and even just to be paid a few days early so I don't have to pay overstay. I mean after all I work for them.

Now as I write this I am not sure if I will still have a life as of tomorrow but I am hoping for a miracle to happen. I have always been kind to people and helped them when I could and I once had more money then needed and DID help many people.

A franchise like this should not be allowed to operate legally as they are always breaking Thai Labor Laws by employing people and not providing a work permit etc. how they get away with it I am not sure but they do every day. They hire unqualified teachers from Khao Sarn rd etc with no degrees and go through teachers like we go through water.

I am sending this out to the Ministry of Education Thailand, the Thai Labor Board, The government foreign affairs office and every website I can post it on in order to let foreigners know how this school operates and hopefully boycott them (which I know will never happen.

As people anywhere in the world (especially claimed Buddhists) we should never allow this to happen. It is 2011.

This school has used farangs and treated people like dogs for many years and needs to be stopped or at least made to follow Thai laws.

UPDATE; Today is Tuesday 14th and I did not have enough insulin for my morning shot. I called Mr X at the head office and asked for an advance in my salary today so I could buy insulin and live and so I could get to work again tomorow. I explained to him that if I do not get any before my evening shots that I will die 100%.

The following is how the conversation went;

  • Mr. X; "I have reviewed your contract and it is my feeling that your performance at work is not good enough for ***** so we have decided to let you go". (I am degree qualified with 10 yrs exp here in Thailand and am actually over-qualified for this franchise).

  • Me; I said ok that is fine but can you have my pay made out today so I can buy insulin please?

  • Mr. X; No, our accountant is not back for 2 days and we will pay you at the end of this month".

  • Me; Sir, I have taught for you 3 times now and I am asking you now as a human being not as an employer to help somehow because I do not want to die or go into a comma".

  • Mr X; Then you must talk to your embassy.

  • Me; I have already talked to them and there is nothing they can do. They said that if I have already worked so many hours that the school should be able to help me.

  • Mr X; Well Tim then I think it is your problem and I cannot help you.

  • Me; Ok Mr X, I am asking you one last time, as a human being you now know that if you do not help me get my insulin today that I will die. Are you saying as a human and as a Buddhist that you will just allow me to die?

  • Mr X; Tim I told you I cannot help. We will have your pay ready at the end of the month.

It is not legal to work without a work permit.

You seem to have managed things rather badly but ranting on TV about how hard done you are by your employer will not solve that. may be time to return home.

If your life is at stake due lack of medication, can't you ask your fellow teachers for help...BTW living in Thailand for 10 years i am sure you must have some friends...

Not a very helpful reply, OP is looking for assistance and passing on his experience re this Company.

Telling him to go home without cash might be very difficult unless of course you are offering to pay his fare in which case, well done Sir.

I am not ranting what so ever. I am simply posting an ad to let other expats know what could happen here. and after being here 10 years I have nothing in Canada also they do not provide free flights. and if you think I have not contacted my embassy you are also wrong.

I have been quite successful here in the past. I am an Engineer in the Oil/Gas and Petro-chemical industry but had my father spen his last 4 years here with me so I could take care of him and could not leave him with the housekeeper because he died last April at 84 and could not speak or understad Thai so I had to re-organize my life as it is my duty to take care of him so I could not accept any work away from Thailand so I taught English. His medical bills were sometimes 80,000 baht per month. I hope you do that for YOUR father when the time comes sir?

It is very easy to critisise people on this forum but you seem rather in-humane to say the least sir.

Anyways I still whish you the best of luck in your future

PS. If you have spent any time here you would know that iin 100% of the cases you first need to get a job, then the company provides you with the paperwork to get your Non "B" visa then you get a work permit. This company I am talking about I think I made it quite clear is NOT A NICE COMPANY.

While the company may, in your opinion, not be a nice company. They simply are not the ones responsible for the position you are currently in.

A new hire that is so needy wouldn't last where I work. Someone that had made it past the probationary period certainly would get some help but even then it would be limited. (I'd go out and buy needed medication and give enough for food out of my own pocket but the company itself would not.) Someone that had proven a reliable and loyal employee over time would get whatever they needed from the company.

You seem to have worked for different franchisees of the same company 3 times. You seem to have been satisfied working for them 2 times and to not have made it out of the probationary period the third time yet you go on to label the company as bad and say that they treat farangs like "dogs".

None of this may seem helpful to you but on a business level saying they will pay you when the pay is due is certainly fair. None of us know how the exchanges between you and your employer really went.

I hope you get the help you so desperately need.

Posted

Whilst I empathise with your predicament, and sympathise with the situation you find yourself in I am surprised that someone who is obviously intelligent with a known ([potentially fatal)medical condition didnt have any "back-up" and allowed this situation to progress to this point and you have to take some responsibility for that.

Having said that, we can all be wiser in hind sight and its very easy for anyone to sit in judgement and if everything you said is true then you have been dealt a lousy hand without doubt.

It probably makes you feel better by posting this here and trying to warn others etc but I feel it will largely fall on deaf ears. TIT as they say, and nothing you have said (concerning employment) is of any real surprise and sadly nothing new or that hasnt been posted before.

Best of Luck.:jap:

Again you did not read so well. When I said I had worked for the same franchise before2 times that would clearly indicate "dedication" as you say and prove that I am not a "fly by night teacher". And my article also says that it is not the franchises that are not good it is the Head Office which governs all the other franchises. You might need to read again before replying to posts here and get all the facts strait.

Again, I said I do not blame anyone for my situation however you would think they could help in an emergency situation where I have already made this month much more then I was asking for.

This company is WELL KNOWN by the Thai Labor Board and yes they do treat teachers like dogs. They hire unqualified teachers with no degrees, offer no contracts for teachers and it is not fair for the "Paying Adult Students" to have 3 or 4 different teachers durring a 30 hour course they had signed up for. This kind of Franchise is known as a "Khao Sarn Rd" schoold and I don't know how they get away with it legaly here.

Actually your right and I did plan for situations like this but also like you say TIT and I will tell you that I am an Engineer in the Oil/Gas & Petro-chemical industry but when my father back home fell ill I had him come and stay with me here in Thailand so I could take care of him, he came here at 80 and died last year at 84. Sometimes his medical bills were 80,000 baht for 3 nights stay in the hospital in which I paid. I also hired a housekeeper and worked local as a Teacher turning down over-seas jobs as an Engineer as I could not leave my father alone with the housekeeper as he could not understand her and was at a period of his life that I needed to be with him every day so that prevented me from making the "big money" for 4 years. I also opened up a factory here making jeans and had the housekeeper of 3 years be my "Thai Partner as she was into this industry before I hired her. I had 20 Thai workers and all was well until my father died then one day I woke up and went to my factory to find out that everything was gone including the Thai partner so I was out 2,000,000

baht. Yes of course I went to the police etc but again TIT. So I am not just some bum who did not plan for my future, I am a victom of being kind to my father and being stupid in trusting people.

You are right. I made a type or wrong statement. What I mean is that I worked for 1 franchise of this company 2 times in the north and now for another branch here in Rangsit. It is NOT the Franchises I should be exploiting but the Main Office of the franchise sorry. I will edit that quote thank you

It wont be that expensive as its a must for diabetics.

Yes I know but when you have always been ok in your life before it is very hard to ask for help. I know I must swallow my pride now but I think if someone wants to help they would do it without me asking them. I am not here looking for sympathy as some seem to think. Just stating facts for Teaching in Thailand and some doe's and don'ts but yes you are right. I do need help

By the way, 2 very nice people have already contacted me and are helping me to get insulin and food so it gives me hope that the world still has good hearted people here and a reason to keep on keeping on. Thank you to these people very much. Now I am off to buy insulin and food.

How are you posting on the internet, if you have a PC then you should be trying to hock it to save your life, if you are in an internet Cafe I think your money would be better spent on Insulin.

Asking for advances on Salary, else you will die - After only a month working there, seems strange to me.

Man Man ohh Man.

First let me address all the posters. Seriously guys you need to have yourself medically checked. Give OP a break all you angels that always plan everything, know everything with high paying jobs and millions stashed in the bank.

Yes i am aware of all the scams etc etc etc, but OP has just posted his story and his experience, so if his story is even 10% true have some compassion rather then attack the guy.

Not all people are perfect like all you bashers, some of us mortals, do not always think or plan out and mistakes do happen.

Now to OP, Sorry to hear about your situation and it must not be a nice place to be in. I think you have a few options,

1. You can go to temple and ask for help

2. You can hock your PC and few other things, but get it back once you been paid

3. Go to government hospital, explain your situation and they might give you free medication.

I have a feeling i know what school you are speaking of, and you are 100% correct about teachers. I went there for 1 year to learn Thai, in that year we changed 9 teachers and it went from bad to worse. I had ex gogo bars girls teachers, girls who can not speak a word of English, girls who can not even read Thai.

With your experience, i think you can get a 20K-30K job as advertised in Bangkok Post, JobJob and everywhere else, while in the mean time look for work at a private school paying good salary.

I hope all works out for you and you will be back on your feet.

Thank you for your kind words and you are correct about people here just itching to attack people in here but usually you can tell by how many posts they have (11,347 posts in 3 years) that they have nothing better to do. I never once asked on my original post for anyones help. Just a warning to people how easy it is to go from riches to rags here in the LOS.

And yes it is a good suggestion to pawn my notebook but is is kind of old and actually without it I have no chance of getting work etc. I also have my house for sale in America and get emails from both my Realter and Lawyer and also most of the jobs I have got in Thailand have been from the internet. I was actually planning on doing it rather then coma or the worse however as I said In my OP i was no0t asking for help but out of the woodwork came 2 very kind people who found it was actually ME helping THEM by letting them send me enough for Insulin and some food. I would like to mention their names here because to me they are TRUE heros of the human race.

Also sir I do not have a problem getting work with my degree and experience here for even 60,000 baht in Bkk but I just chose to stay clear of the city and to be honest it is not easy renting there as they all want 3 months down and 1 month rent so even at 6000 baht per month thats 24k. When I get paid I will of course be ok and until then (now that I have some insulin and food) I will probably go back into Future Park Rangsit and just get another job.

PS, Just FYI if someone goes to a temple here for refuge you must be able to ask the head monk for help in transcrip dialect and then if you are invited in surely you are ok but then there is always the problem of Visa.

When I was working for S- -M they new my tourist visa was about to expire on the 26th of this month and I was asking them to speed up the process and have my paperwork ready by that date to get my "B" visa but as you know this plase just doesn't give a dam_n about us. I also asked if they could pay me on the 26th intstead of the 31st so I wouldnt have to pay 2500 baht overstay and they refused. They even wanted me to work on Christmas day and I told them I was Cathlic (In real I believe in Buddhism) and that I would not work on Jesus's B-day and asked if they would work on their King's B-day or on Buddha day and you know what they said.

mKawish: What a very decent thing to say and offer. You certainly have the Christmas spirit. There are good people here after all.

Yes I agree. There are good people everywhere.

The story I posted here is just the half of it. It goes on and on. The worst of it is that when I started on November 12th I told them that my Visa will expire on Dec 26th and was told by the Director "No problems Tim, We will have all the paperwork ready for you to get your Non "B" visa by then". After a couple of weeks passed I asked him again how it was going and he told me that he had already applied to the MOE (Ministry of Education) for my paperwork and that he would ask them to speed it up. However when I called them (and I do speak good Thai) they told me they had no idea and no record of such application.

This means that now come Dec 26th I will be on overstay at 500 baht per day and even if I had the money to go for a visa run to Vientiene Laos, I would only be able to apply for another "Tourist" visa and am not sure they would give me one due to this being the 3rd time I would have applied. My last job in Sakon Nakhon for the same MAIN Company did not get the paperwork or a contract for me so I was surviving on "Tourist" visas. However now that I have been screwed AGAIN by them, I don't have the money for the Visa run on the 26th. :(

Trust me, I could write a novel regarding this Franchise.

PS, To Mr Mkawish, Thank you for the offer for accomodation but my rent here in Rangsit is paid up until January the first. I just dont have the money for next month now and no food. lol. Might seem crazy but I have to laugh.

Hahahahaha,

Here is a good one. I was contacted by them late yesterday and told that The branch needed me to return the keys for the desk I used in Rangsit Branch before they will consider anything. Now I have to tell you these are small desk keys and last week when I was teaching 14 Prathom 2 students they key was hanging out of the lock and one of the kids pushed against it and it broke off in the lock but you can still open it. Now here is an email I just recieved from them;

Tim, I've checked with branch about the keys. One key was broken.

It was reported to the account department. They may deduct 30 Bht.

for the broken key.

Why let it go/ So other farangs can go through the same thing I did? This is a discussion forum and when people reply I also reply. This is why I made this post. Do you work for them or something?

Also how do you figure everything has worked out for me? Did you read my posts?

I mean now they want to dedect 30 baht for a broken key...............

Just do not do anything stupid, K?

You are no longer under their umbrella of protection or grace.

Come January, if you still can not find anything half way decent according to your likings, pm me.

There are English teaching jobs across the country for qualified and certified educators with genuine VERIFIABLE degrees and certifications.

Just say, you have been offered a free room and free meals in January, if needed.

Hahahahaha,

Here is a good one. I was contacted by them late yesterday and told that The branch needed me to return the keys for the desk I used in Rangsit Branch before they will consider anything. Now I have to tell you these are small desk keys and last week when I was teaching 14 Prathom 2 students they key was hanging out of the lock and one of the kids pushed against it and it broke off in the lock but you can still open it. Now here is an email I just recieved from them;

Tim, I've checked with branch about the keys. One key was broken.

It was reported to the account department. They may deduct 30 Bht.

for the broken key.

Unless there is some hidden secret message here I am not quite following your posts? My I adress your last reply in Red font;

Just do not do anything stupid, K? I'm sorry but I do not get what your saying? What could I do that would be stupid?

You are no longer under their umbrella of protection or grace. This I also do not get? I was never under anyones umbrella of protection or grace.

Come January, if you still can not find anything half way decent according to your likings, pm me. Thank you but who are you? Are you able to get me a job? I could do with one now.

There are English teaching jobs across the country for qualified and certified educators with genuine VERIFIABLE degrees and certifications. Yes there are many websites posting these jobs and normally how I find them however you can see in my post that I have just moved back from Sakon Nakhon in the north and set myself up here. It is not that easy just to keep packing all of my belongings and moving around the country with no money.

Just say, you have been offered a free room and free meals in January, if needed. Who am I supposed to say this to? Maybe you can explain this quote a little more? It sounds like YOU are making an offer but this is hard to determine.
