Pc Gameport To Usb Converter

Featured Replies

Hi, Does anyone know if it is possible to buy a PC gameport to USB converter in any of bangkoks computer malls? My piano keyboard has only an old gameport plug, which worked fine before my old desktop PC "died", but I'd like to be able to use the piano on my laptop. I live upcountry, but will be visiting Bangkok in January, any advice greatly appreciated.

Your piano is certainly using the MIDI functionality of the gameport, so you'll need to verify if the adaptor you obtain supports the MIDI functions. The ones I've looked at on eBay don't say anything about MIDI so chances are they don't do it.

Alternatively, if the end of the cable that plugs into the piano is a round 5-pin DIN connector it's likely a standard MIDI connector so you'll be better off buying a USB to MIDI converter.

I've not looked for any of these converters (being tone-deaf musical instruments never played a part in my education), but they are certainly a somewhat specialist item, perhaps the Yamaha professional music centre in Fortune Town (Pha-Ram 9 metro station) would be a good starting point.

EDIT I reckon this will get better mileage in the main technology forum, moving it there.

Thanks for the advice, I'll look in the Yamaha shop in January. The lead I have at present is a 15 pin one, which plugs into the (now defunct) gameport socket on the PC. The other end has a box to plug the MIDI leads into, from the piano keyboard. I've found some from a UK supplier, but am awaiting an answer as to whether the MIDI sockets will work. I really don't want to buy a new piano keyboard, it was brought over in a suitcase from the UK, can see trouble with 'er indoors if I can't use it anymore. :whistling:
