Three killed, dozens injured after Kenya bus explosion

2010-12-22 03:20:08 GMT+7 (ICT)

NAIROBI, KENYA (BNO NEWS) -- At least three people were killed on Monday and dozens more were injured when a bus exploded in Kenya's capital of Nairobi, local authorities said on Tuesday.

The explosion happened on the junction of Nduruma and River roads in downtown Nairobi at around 7:40 p.m. local time. A grenade is suspected to have been the cause of the explosion on the bus, which belonged to the Kampala Couch company and was reportedly heading to Kampala in Uganda.

According to reports, a man who carried the grenade was pronounced dead at Kenyatta National Hospital while two other people died while undergoing treatment at MP Shah Hospital. In addition, hospital officials said 37 people had been admitted to receive medical treatment.

Reports indicate that people were lined up to board the bus when the explosion took place.

"The bus had arrived late and the passengers were scrambling to get in as we screened them. In the confusion, there was an explosion before I saw at least six people lying here," said bus driver Hussein Abdulaziz, adding that around 20 of the 45 people who were scheduled to board were already inside the bus.

No group or organization has claimed responsibility for the attack, but Kampala Inspector General of Police Major General Kale Kayihura said he got confirmation from his Kenyan counterparts that the attack was carried out by a Somali national.

Authorities earlier signaled out Al-Qaeda, Al-Shabaab and ADF as the main threats during the holiday seasons.
