Chalerm: Not enough info for 4-day debate

Pheu Thai MP Chalerm Yoobamrung Thursday conceded the upcoming censure might lack the substance to justify a four-day debate, voicing concern about the opposition being upstaged by the coalition.

"I believe the coalition will be at advantage from the lengthy censure because the public attention will wane," he said.

There are only so many ' We heard it all before" moments, that the public can pay attention through. Been there, done that, same result. Why listen a 3rd time? Certainly K. Minkwan Deville isn't exactly a scintillating public orator.

Is there now going to be such a word as Borator?

With endless Boration?

Or Thai'd up as a Nawnrator. ;)

with all the resonance among the younger set as 'Wenging on' had.

Use in a sentence:

'The Nawnrator was Wenging on till the kwae came home.'

'In the blink of an eye the boration was ended.'

Police Captain Chalerm said he was not confident if there would be enough evidences to support the Pheu Thai Party in the debate against the Democrat Party which was expected to last 4 days.

Strange, that has never stopped them before (when Pol.Cap. Chalerm led the censure debate). A mild case of 'not made here' and absolutely political shrewdness ;)

"I believe the coalition will be at advantage from the lengthy censure because the public attention will wane," he said.

Chalerm said the Democrats were known for their mastery of House rules which could turn the tables on the opposition.

Of the 66 hours allotted for the debate, 10 censure targets will have 20 hours for rebuttals and the coalition lawmakers are allowed six hours to protest the opposition's speeches.

In regard to his involvement in the censure, he said he expected to grill the government on the fourth and final day of debate in order to cover points overlooked by other opposition lawmakers.

He said his grilling would focus on issues like the 3G contracts for mobile phone operators, the issuing of smart identification cards and the construction contracts for Blue Line train.

Although Pheu Thai MP Mingkwan Saengsuwan had his own style in leading the censure, he said the grilling on each target should not last more than two hours in order to maintain the undivided attention from the audience.

He said he disagreed with the grillings of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban because the two were good orators who could survive and outshine the verbal attacks from the opposition.

He said the only chance for Pheu Thai to wrestle power from Abhisit was by showcasing the achievements of ex-prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Commenting on speculation about a snap election, he said Abhisit would try to cling to power for as long as he could.

K. Chalerm should quote from the wikipedia pages:

Very, very interesting.

As for snap elections, k. Thaksin knows how to do that as proven February 2006, but PM Abhisit is currently waiting for the censure debate. He wanted to give the opposition a fair chance to comment on the government's performance. Once done, we'll have a House dissolution and following new general elections. Aim for June, as far as my crystal ball tell me :)

Censure debate to be held on March 9 -12

nationlogo.jpg

-- The Nation 2011-03-01

According to the other paper today, it's been delayed after the House Speaker found the Pheu Thai Party submission for a censure debate was incomplete.

The new dates will likely be March 15-19.

Seems some papers went missing

and signatures were incorrect or didn't match.

Dems allegedly wanted debate to coincide with Red Rally,

BJP wanted it later to prepare more,

this would benefit Newin Chidchob theoretically.

I wonder which side got to handle the papers in the office

prior to Chai Chidchob getting them? rolleyes.gifwhistling.gif

Censure debate postponed

The no-confidence motion could not be put on agenda in time for the debate to take place next week, House Secretary-General Pithoon Pumhiran said Friday.

Pithoon said House Speaker Chai Chidchob sent the motion back to him to verify some names on the list of motion sponsors at 2 pm Friday.

Since the motion could not be put on agenda by Friday, the debate could not be held next Wednesday as initially scheduled, the

secretary-general said.

Earlier, the coalition and opposition whips agreed to hold the debate from Wednesday to March 12.

No offence, but the zig-zagging is also reported in other newspapers, including Thai language ones. Just Yahoo/Google around a bit.

Don't confuse him, rubl.

You're interrupting his opportunity to throw out a general diss and a personal slam at the same time with a solitary one-liner sentence. He obviously doesn't have time to do such mundane task as verifying anything he's dissing or slamming. Heck, it's going on 3 months for the post he's replying to.

Everything the paper writes is wrong, whether or not the same is reported elsewhere, and every poster that reads them is wrong.

PM: Postponement of censure debate unrelated to UDD March 12 rally

BANGKOK, March 4 -- Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Friday said the postponement of the censure debate was unrelated to the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) planned rally on March 12, but was due to the incomplete documents submitted by the opposition Puea Thai party.

Mr Abhisit said he was informed by House Speaker Chai Chidchob that the censure debate against himself and nine other ministers will be postponed.

Mr Chai reasoned the delay was the result of the incomplete documents pending the verification process, so the motion could not be submitted by Friday.

The no-confidence debate was previously slated for March 9-12 with a separate voting date on March 13.

The new date has yet been set but it is expected that the debate will be scheduled on March 15-18 with voting on March 19.

Puea Thai party-list MP Mingkwan Saengsuwan, in his capacity as head of the opposition debate team, and opposition chief whip Witthaya Buranasiri on Tuesday submitted a no-confidence motion to House Speaker Chai Chidchob, which was endorsed by 122 opposition MPs.

Cabinet ministers reportedly will be grilled, including the prime minister himself, Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban, Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij, Information and Communication Technology Minister Juti Krairiksh, PM's Office Minister Ong-art Klampaiboon, Interior Minister Chavarat Charnvirakul, Transport Minister Sohpon Zarum, Commerce Minister Porntiva Nakasai, Deputy Agriculture Minister Supachai Phosu and Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya.

The UDD plans to hold a mass rally on March 12 which also marks the first anniversary of the UDD protest last year.

All seven leaders of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship who were recently released on bail are expected to appear on stage at the Democracy Monument during the rally.

Their appearance at the rally would not contravene the court's bail conditions, which only prohibits them from leaving the country and inciting unrest.

The seven released leaders -- Natthawut Saikua, Weng Tojirakan, Korkaew Pikulthong, Kwanchai Praipana, Yoswaris Chuklom aka Jeng Dokchik, Nisit Sinthuprai and Wiphuthalaeng Pattanaphumthai -- are expected to address their Red Shirt supporters.

Was wondering why they can only get 122 of the opposition to endorse their motion.

How many are there on the opposition benches and why are the rest not backing the motion?

Ok Gone and looked it up myself.

According to wikipedia PTP have 187 seats although I think this may be out of date as they ahave had some defections and some kicked out.

Paendin have 32 seats

PPR have 8.

Which gives a total opposition of 227.

Given that they can only get 122 to sign the motion that leaves 105 opposition members who have not signed it.

Posted (edited)

I don't think they needed more than 122 to get it on the docket. Why twist arms when there's no need, save the strength for when arm twisting is a life saver, or at least when the boss says to do it.

Even though that is the minimum required, why not get all 227?

As a sign of solidarity and power, why not make it a unanimous motion?

Your thoughts are very valid and it reflects the disharmony and fractionating within the Party, although the constant squabbling of Chalerm and Mingkwan and Chalerm flip-flopping on his censure debate participation have already been displayed for all to see.

Added to the mix are the three Pheu Thai Party MP's currently being impeached by the NACC.

And now adding terrorist suspects, including nepotistic proxy nominees of those red terrorists who are even now still on the run from the law, to the Pheu Thai Party rolls and the calamity of PTP is staggering.

Was thinking along the lines that a no confidence motion is something that, if won, will force the Govt to resign.

Any party that files such a motion should be doing it from a position of power with the intention of bringing down the Govt.

Yet PTP seem to be doing it with the full knowledge that they havent got a show of winning even if they could get their full contingent to vote for them, and their recent voting history would indicate they cant do that.

Seems in this case thay are just doing it because...well, there is an election coming this year so we have to keep our names in the headlines and we cant think of anything else to do.

You would be disappointed if it wasn't Thaksin that paid, right? Highly unlikely he paid. These people were coming to argue on behalf of someone Mr. Thaksin doesn't support. Why would he have paid for that?

I'm just wondering who paid. K. Thaksin is indeed unlikely even for a social visit ;)

So did all 40 pay out of their own pockets? Free THAI ticket? With best wishes from (un)grateful tax-payers?

With their snouts in the trough, I'm fairly confident that could all afford their own air-fare.

Geez Animatic

You use some strange words like Manichaean.

I had to look it up which I something I haven't had to do in a long time.

Good word though.

1.

Pertaining to a strongly dualistic worldview.

2.

Of or pertaining to the Manicheans or their doctrines.

noun:

1.

An adherent of the dualistic religious system of Manes, a combination of gnostic Christianity, Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, and various other elements, with a basic doctrine of a conflict between light and dark.

Quotes:

And in such a Manichean national landscape of villains and heroes, either the government, the Church, or the "rich"-or, alternatively, the "communists" and the "agitators"-hoodwinked the noble people into doing what they in retrospect should not have.

-- Victor David Hanson, "Greek Tragedies", Wall Street Journal, May 2010

Discussion of ethical issues in the media is often presented as some sort of Manichean battle between principle and profit, with the latter usually winning out.

-- Hugh Linehan, "Journalistic ethics, Twitter and the reporting of Gerry Ryan's death", The Irish Times

Origin:

Manichean describes the dualistic religious system of Manes, a combination of gnostic Christianity, Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, and various other elements, with a basic doctrine of a conflict between light and dark, matter being regarded as dark and evil.

Motivation can also be derived from the Party Financier with the expected task failure by Mingkwan (same as the abysmal performance during the recent budget debate).

The Party Financier will have his reported plans come to fruition when Mingkwan falls flat on his face (despite the significant wind resistance from his over-sized ears slowing down his fall) after the debate.

Then, he'll be able to tell his minions, "See? I gave him the opportunity, but it's just not working out. Best if we give Yingluck a try now."

Funny how the incompetence of the Pheu Thai Party, in filing their incomplete motion as determined by the Bhum Jai Thai Party's House Speaker Chai, is now attempting to be turned around to....

Pheu Thai blames Democrat for censure debate delay

BANGKOK, 5 March 2011 (NNT)-The Pheu Thai Party claimed the government’s decision to reschedule the censure debate was not because it was not ready as accused by the Democrat Party. The Opposition explained the delay was in fact due to a period which the Parliament needed to approve the censure motions.

The Democrat alleged the Pheu Thai Party for one missing document and that the signatures confirming their motion did not match the paper given to the Parliament earlier. Group Captain Anudit Nakorntap, an Opposition MP, denied all allegations, saying the ruling Party was dubious.

He said it was not true also that the debate was postponed because of his Party’s inability to find a member to lead the debate. According to him, given that the censure motion was submitted last Tuesday and that the Secretariat of the Senate had already processed the censure motion; therefore, the Democrat’s claims over the inefficiency of Pheu Thai members were unfounded.

Did I read somewhere that PTP would have 40hrs to speak on their motion and the Govt 20hrs to reply?

If this is true then it is clearly a case of double standards and I would expect PTP to be complaining bitterly as they are so keen on eliminating double standards.

But then again possibly not, when it works for them it would be OK.

K. Chalerm voiced his concern that the PTP might not have enough information for a three day debate. So to allocate 40 hours to PTP must clearly be a trick by the current government and maybe the PM himself, that British oppressor ;)
