My knowledge of the Safety and Environmental check (MOT?) on vehicles in Thailand is minimal.

As far as I am aware, all vehicles over 7 years old should be checked out and a certificate given if the vehicle passes the tests.

I was waiting by the 'test centre' and observed:

The check on a car appeared to be a quick visual check under the bonnet (hood), a check on the steering and brakes, and a seatbelt check.

The check on a motorcycle was a steering check, a brake check (I think), an emission test (sensor up the exhaust) and a noise check (decibel meter 1 metre from the exhaust). The latter two checks were not made on the car.

Does anyone know the full extent of checks that should be carried out and the results requirements.

My truck is 6 years old soon.

Don't worry your head about it.

Like almost everything else in Thailand the document will be supplied so long as you pay a few hundred Baht to the "Authorised Test Centre" - which is usually just a local garage with minimal test equipment anyway.

Conversely, if you DON'T pay they will find a whole list of things wrong with the vehicle which need to be fixed before they will re-test ........ and overcharge you for the work to compensate.

I had a Toyota "Hero Wagon" which I used to deliver product; it was roadworthy but really needed work on the engine to reduce emissions - one of the things they are supposed to check for. Every year I sent it (with a Thai driver) to the local "Test Centre" with 200 Baht and the certificate was issued without comment.
