Old Money

Featured Replies

I will be returning to Thailand in a few weeks after about a 5 year absence. I have about 6,000 baht of all denominations from my last trip in 2006. Has there been any changes to the currency in that time period? Will the age of the notes be obvious and might I encounter problems trying to spend them? I would like to use them for the car ride from the airport and to check into my hotel for the first night. Thanks.

you will be fine

there was a coup in 2006, and while they changed many things, currency was not one of them :whistling:

cheers :)

Your 6000 baht is now worth $200 instead $150

You flatterer, you... Can you list the things that they changed, that made any difference to any of us?

There was some added uncertainty, a delay in decisions that many of us were waiting for, some ridiculous fannying about with exchange rate controls that I believe were reversed, but no real change,.,,

Don`t worry about the condition of your Thai currency, I promise you they won`t refuse to take your money.

That's for sure!

I`m in a sorry state, Ian. My last condom that has never been used and still in the wrapper just passed it`s sell by date.

You`ll have to take me out with you one night and share the benefit of your experience, remembering of course that I haven`t got much money, so nothing too up market please.

The usual run of the mill slappers will do.

That was my problem also when I was young and handsome.... I didn't have any money. :(

Now I've got money and time but I'm no longer young and handsome. :(

Life just ain't fair.

Sorry for the banter, OP. We are just having fun here. There's never any problem with old currency. If it gets REALLY old it becomes a collectors treasure. I had 2000 pounds in UK currency and lost about a third of it over an 8 year period due to exchange rates. Same with US money I had when the Canadian dollar was only worth 70 cents US. Now our money is on par and I've lost 30%.

Despite foreign reports about Thailand, it's still a relatively modern country that doesn't change its currency and throw out the old.

what does that make us here then? biblical? we went from lira to shekels to new shekels in the years ive been here, and at one point there was a consideration to go over to the dollar. as a matter of fact, many prices are given in dollars for that added chic of feeling foreign.

btw, in thailand i had problems exchangeing old dollars. my mother sends me $$ in the mail as presents nothing big, like a few 20 and 50 bills. i saved them over a few years (exactly for travelling purposes) and we took them with us to thailand. well, bangkok refused the serial numbers from 1996 etc. however, korat didnt care. so if one place refuses try up country

Geez, Bina, where you are living IS biblical. :D I've got a whole bag full of old coins from various countries. If I live ANOTHER 200 years maybe they'll be worth something again.
