MAKHACHKALA, RUSSIA (BNO NEWS) -- Four militants on Wednesday were killed during a special operation in Russia's North Caucasus, RIA Novosti news agency reported.

The anti-terrorism special operation is currently underway in the city of Khasavyurt in the North Caucasus republic of Dagestan. So far, four militants have been killed by the police forces.

"Four militants were killed in a shootout. Their identities are being proved. A special operation continues," said a spokesman for the anti-terrorism committee (NAC).

On Tuesday, Russian police forces killed another two rebels in Makhackala, the capital city of Dagestan. The shot militants were suspected of murders and attempts on the lives of police officers.

The NAC informed that more than half of the terrorist attacks registered during the last year took place in the troubled Dagestan. Russia has been heavily involved in combating militant groups in the North Caucasus area.

In April 2009, Russia ended its ten-year-long anti terrorism campaign against separatist forces in Chechnya. However, police forces have continuously clashed with militants in the republic and surrounding areas.
