I am going to stay a few weeks in Bangkok and at that place they have a nice swimmingpool. However i have never seen anybody doing anything around it. And only very few people take a swim.

It looks good but looks can be deceiving.

Did not smell chlorine, can be bad or they are hopefully using just enough.

Water is clear, no sludge on the bottom, ridges and intakes.

What would i need to buy to test the quality of the water?

Get a 4 in 1 test kit (the type with DPD tablets and coloured solutions with a double test vial) to test for chlorine, ph, total alkanility acid demand

I'm no expert, but if you smell chlorine, they've over done it. Pool guys here tend to use lots of chlorine. I fought with my initial guy regarding this, but no luck. So now have somebody else do it and they've got it pretty well figured out. If the water looks clear, and no chlorine smell, they might be doing a great job!

Hi There,

You don’t actual smell chlorine what you smell is chlorine that has reacted with substances in the water generally containing nitrogen compounds (like urine) they form monochloramine, dichloramine and or trichlormaine, these are known as combined available chlorine or chloramines this is why you have pungent odour and get irritation to skin and eyes.

Ineffective filteration and sanitation will cause chloramines to be more noticeable.

Buy some pool test strips, they are easy to use, just dip them in the water & compare the colours on the pack to get your results.

do these strips also work for salt water pools and will they tell you when to add more salt

thanx

Yes, they work for salt water pools (which still actually use chlorine). Low salt is indicated on the control panel of the chlorinator. No testing strips needed for that (but a salt tester is available for sale).

it could be also that the water is clear and there is no chlorine smell because acid only is used (a fraction of the cost of chlorine). you'll find out after a couple of days should the cleft between your buttocks be somewhat raw and hurting.

that was the case years ago when we stayed as tourists at a renowned hotel in Pattaya. my wife, just out of the pool, sat down with me at a table to have some snacks and i saw her "bleeding". of course it was no blood but the low pH (which i measured later to be 4.2!) dissolved the dye of her bikini fabric. coolly the manager in charge explained his reasons and was proud to state "100% free of bacteria!"
