Bail Withdrawal Again Sought for Red-shirt MP

The special investigation agency has once again submitted a petition requesting the court to withdraw the bail granted for a red-shirt leader for violating the bail conditions.

Director-General of the Department of Special Investigation, Tharit Pengdit, this morning lodged another complaint with the Criminal Court asking for the removal of bail for Pheu Thai Party MP Jatuporn Prompan who is also a core leader of the red-shirt group.

Tharit reasoned Jatuporn had played a key role in helping fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra make a live telephone address to the red-shirt rally on January 9.

The DSI Chief said parts of Thaksin's address were deemed as interference to the ongoing legal proceedings against Jatuporn.

According to the DSI, Thaksin's act is a direct violation of Jatuporn's bail conditions.

Tharit shrugged off Jatuporn's threat to take legal action against him.

Jatuporn claimed Tharit has an ulterior motive in his attempt to put him in prison.

The DSI has named Tharit and Police Lieutenant-Colonel Thawal Mangkhang as eyewitnesses against Jatuporn.

VDO evidence of Jatuporn's involvement in Thaksin's public address was also included for the court's consideration.

Just a few minutes after Tharit submitted his petition for the bail to be withdrawn, Jatuporn managed to file a counter-suit against the DSI, claiming he did not violate the bail conditions as accused.

The red-shirt MP accused the DSI of treating him unfairly given how the department has sought to have his bail revoked four times.

Jatuporn argued that if his contact with Thaksin was considered unlawful, then the meeting between Deputy Prime Minister Sanan Kachornprasart with the ousted premier in Norway must also be deemed illegal.

The red-shirt leader said Thaksin did not talk about prevailing terrorism charges against him and denied that he has threatened Tharit.

Northeastern red shirts meet leaders in Khon Kaen

By The Nation

Red shirts from Northeastern provinces gathered in Khon Kaen yesterday for a function to introduce all leaders of the movement in the region.

Khon Kaen was chosen by the red-shirt leadership in Bangkok because it was viewed as the heart of the movement in the Northeast, said Noppadon Sidathan, coordinator of the Democracy Lovers from 40 Districts of Six Northeastern Provinces.

The function began at about 3pm and was scheduled to end at midnight. The opening ceremony was presided over by former Army chief General Chaisit Shinawatra, a cousin of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Jatuporn Prompan, a red-shirt leader and MP from the opposition Pheu Thai Party, was to address the gathering.

Noppadon said the function was also intended as the first get-together of the year for red shirts in the Northeast.

A red-shirt source in Khon Kaen yesterday complained that some "phoney red shirts" had made profits from recent fund-raising events there and in other Northeastern provinces.

"It's unclear if the donations have been used up. People have doubts about the management of funds. Many people have been involved in a dispute over management of the money," the source said.

Meanwhile, Khon Kaen police chief Maj-General Nikom Inchoedchai said three police units had been sent to the site of the red-shirt gathering to keep order. He did not expect any serious incidents during the event, although he warned of legal action against any troublemakers.

'red-shirts gather'? Which faction of the red-shirts? As k. Chaisit S. presided over the opening and with k. Jatuporn supposed to address the party I assume we had a gathering of the UDD. I'm a bit surprised Mrs. Thida is not mentioned? Do we have a new UDD spin-off?

As for the 'phony' redshirts profiting from fundraising, how about the complaints raised against k. Jatuporn a few months ago? Surely he's not phony, is he? He promised to come up with receipts, or a videoclip or something, I vaguely remember.

As for k. Jatuporn's presence, possible speech, possible breach of bail conditions, I'm sure someone will tape the event ;)
