Lets face there is no standard way of speaking English, even amongst 1st language English speakers, Spoken English varies over short distances in the UK...ie Liverpool vs Manchester, Newcastle to Glasgow. Internationally we have American English, Austrialian English etc...even Singapore has its own version of English..named "Slinglish"

My opinion after many years working internationally in multi-cultural/mutli-language enviroments were English is the contract languge, if the person concerned can make him/her self understood about what they are talking about in English....their English skills are good enough, irrespective of how they speak it.

Do i think Thailand would benefit "internationally" having a certain degree/standard of English spoken widely across the country....Yes,

If one looks at Cambodia, which was a French colony, one would expect French to be a "second language" but in fact its English and spoken for the most part at a higher level than is spoken in Thailand

Food for thought...

I agree 100%, and how good are the foreign language skills of us native English speakers? we are generally in no position to comment about another's Englsih skill until we are fluent in at least 1 other language

Nail on the head time. Sorry but we seem to have no idea what you are talking about, although we probably all have some pet peeve that others would scratch their head over.

alfieconn, robblok, soutpeel, bermondburi, you've all been very bad boys. Using "pigeon" (or even "pidgeon") instead of "pidgin". You should know that this is one of SBK's pet peeves, and she'll be round to smack your bottoms if you persist in this. She may even keep you in after school!

she can smack my bottom any time !! I quite like that !!:D

well said

to clarify

the thing i was picking up on was about ATTITUDE

had absolutely nothing to do with ISSAN

and absolutely nothing to do with ABILITY

which most of the posts are about

never mind

but thanks so much for trying

my faith in TV has been restored

by some impressively erudite, polite, considerate, helpful and funny writers (thinly) sprinkled amongst the threads

:D

SBK has already told me off for pigeon, pidgin, pidgeon, I see you toucan get it wrong.

The first is a bird

The second is a daft way of talking

The third is either a spelling mistake or an archaic spelling of the bird.

So while complaining of their irritating ways of speaking, one should also consider ones own irritating ways of spelling.

There you have it!

Off topic a little bit, but my daughter is learning English and gets told off if she speaks pidgeon english and then farangs come round and speak pidgeon English to her :annoyed: .

My theory was/is i talk English & English only to my little one from day dot, & Mum talks Thai & Thai only to her..

Of course little one here's her Mum talking English to me ( that is when she talks to me, which isn't very much to be honest ) but in doing that littl elearns to differenciate between the 2 Languages immediately and as soon as she started to talk etc..

Same goes for Books, same Book for 2 nights, me one night, her Mum the next..

The difference between her command of BOTH Lnaguage at 4 Years old to some of my Pal's Kid's is incredible, hoenstly..

& i will not tolerate any one of my Pals talking that tripe to her, forget it, it ell them to shut up immediately & generaly humiliate them when i do so, so they won't do it again neither....:D

Quotes of posters on this thread, probably native English speakers.

"I should of told them...."

"He is suppose to be ...."

"pidgeon"

"your writing a poem "

As a foreigner (Dutchman) I'm often shocked by the lack of correct English by those who have been surrounded by English from the day they were born.

Now this thread about the way Thais/Isan use English language. I can't believe it.

If OP doesn't understand something Thais do he should consider it is him who lacks understanding of Thais and not Thais being "irritating" as he stated.

Language is a communication tool, the better you can communicate the more fluent you can call your ability to speak the language. It is not important how you use a language as long as you can make clear what you mean. The same works for Thais: as long as they can make clear what they mean they have control of the language. Exception of course for one's own language, that should be correct.

Education in Isan is not on a high level, in my rural village school are three Thai teachers for English, two of them cannot have a conversation with me as their English is not sufficient....

That's one reason I'm always delighted when Isan people try to speak English, no matter how they do it, if they manage to make me understand (and mostly they do) what they mean they are the heroes.

Speaking of foreign languages: how many languages do e.g. Cambrian farmers/Sheffield coal miners speak? You want to hear them speak French, German? No, of course not. But you want Isan people speak English, and not pigeon English (BTW the right word, not pidgin Papua or pidgeon) but correct English! An insult!

Oh, before throwing stones at me, I am fluent in four languages and I know how difficult it is to transform grammar into spoken language.

Nice example of communication and simplification of a language:

English: "Could it be I used one or more words that have slightly irritated you and in a way that you are kind of upset with me now?"

Isan: "You angry me?"

Great ability, great people!

Cheers

Joe

I have a friend who teaches English at a university.

He comes round to my house and speaks pidgin to my kids my wife and me.

When those guys start saying stupid things like "cheu arai?" to my kids i tell them immediately to stop. Also my kids think they're idiots.

For SOME of us, speaking is an attempt to effectively communicate. The Thai language is primary words then modifiers. This makes speaking Thaiglish or pidgin English more effective thus easier to understand. What do I care if English purists are offended and look down on me? For the purists, the best way to avoid listening to crude pidgin English is to learn to speak Thai fluently and simply close your ears and not listen to some of us who are too lazy to learn to speak pure Thai.

Nice post, Deejah! You!! We live in Thailand, we have to understand why Thais behave the way they do, not mouth off about them. I try never to take offence when Thais shout at me (they shout at each other the same way, except it sounds natural in Thai). Just as, I don't judge farangs in general by the negative posters in TV; pity them Deejah, they have nothing better to do.

Oh yes, and I forgot. Pidgin is a particular brand of English developed in certain parts of the world. e.g. China coast pidgin, now dying out, which developed as a means of communication between the Chinese and their farang masters (charming expressions like 'makee learnee"); the only one, as far as I know, which has become an official language is in Papua New Guinea, where even the daily newspaper is called 'Nugini TokTok' (sorry if this is slightly wrong; I've never been to TPNG, so this is hearsay + a fallible memory). There is no pidgin in Thailand.

Pidgin English is a type of lingua franca, in other words a language that is developed so the speakers of different tongues can communicate There are many examples throughout the World. As has been mentioned before in P.N.Guinea, Swahili in Kenya and Tanzania, "Fanigalo" in southern Africa, Nepalese in Nepal, I'm sure there are many more.

ASs far as I am concerned, however a Thai speaks to me I don't mind as long as I understand, I however will always try to speak correct English to them.

I'm another one who can't quite work out the Isaan connection. My guess is that the thread is really about the limited English picked up by people from the NE working in low-paid service jobs in tourist resorts. Of course, there are plenty of well-educated professionals from the NE who can speak pretty good English. My guess though is that those who haven't shaken off their NE accents may have more trouble with certain English language sounds than central Thais. The 'r' sound is one obvious example, and I fancy that there may be problems with 'ch' and 'th'. What do other people think?

My wife and I have a language policy with our Daughter, she speaks to her for the most part in Thai,

and I only speak to her in English,so she never hears "Pidgin English"and my poor attempts at Thai,

the result is she is fluent in both languages.

As for those that speak too loudly, its a way of domineering a conversation.

whichever Nationality, its very irritating ,regardless of whether the content is of any interest or not.

Problems with L too,

hence Footbon & Schoon (sic) and most noticeable spoken from Thai School Teachers.
