Suan Dusit Poll: Public reject TPN’s bid to petition HM the King

BANGKOK, 18 January 2011 (NNT) – The planned attempt of the Thai Patriots Network (TPN) to submit a petition to His Majesty the King to oust the government is deemed improper, according to a recent survey by Suan Dusit Poll of Rajabhat Suan Dusit University.

The survey was conducted among 1,251 respondents in Bangkok and its vicinities regarding the ongoing protest of the TPN. The group, an affiliation of the People’s Alliance of Democracy (PAD), is blasting the government for failure to take action over the arrest of seven Thais in Cambodia.

44.67% of the respondents believed that the protest was caused by the delay in the government reaction; however, 20.27% of them said the rally was within the TPN’s rights, but it must be done in a suitable frame.

Regarding the planned attempt to lodge a petition to HM the King to oust the Democrat-led government, 64.81% of the respondents deemed it inappropriate, reasoning that the group should let the government deal with the issue to help the Thai detainees.

42.95% of the respondents urged that the government express a clearer stance and enthusiasm to take strong actions and bring all the seven Thai people back. 25.36% of them agreed that Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva should negotiate directly with his Cambodian counterpart Hun Sen.

School Protests Local Paper for Alleging Punishment Caused Death of Student

Teachers and students at a high school in the southern province of Trang are criticizing a local newspaper report for stating that the death of a student was allegedly the result of corporal punishment by a teacher.

Over 1,200 teachers and students at Wat Khuanwiset Munlanithi Secondary School gathered in front of the school's main building to protest a local newspaper for misreporting that a second year high school student died after he allegedly received corporal punishment by a teacher last week.

The student reportedly collapsed in front of his classroom when he came back from playing a computer game.

Autopsy results indicated that sudden cardiac arrest was the cause of death, as no bruises or other signs of physical abuses were found.

The group demanded that the newspaper print an apology on its paper for seven days, as the report was damaging to the school's reputation.

More than ten police officers were deployed to the school to ensure security.

Leading hoteliers call for establishment of tourism bank

BANGKOK, Jan 18 – A group of leading Thai hoteliers on Monday met Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij and a representative of the government's specialised financial institutions called for the government to establish a tourism bank tasked to sserve the tourism sector only.

Hotels included in the meeting were the Pavilion Samui, Boutique Resort, Silver Sand Resort, Nara Resort, and Bandara Hotels & Resorts.

Small and Medium Enterprise Bank President Soros Sakornvisava said he did not yet know the details of the request, but said in practice, establishing a tourism bank is difficult to accomplish.

The group of hoteliers called for the establishment of such a bank, citing the government’s approval of setting up a Post Bank in December and the earlier chartering of the Islamic Bank of Thailand.

The hoteliers claimed the establishment of such a bank would not rely on loan support by the specialised financial institutions, he said.

Mr Soros said SME Bank had long given financial support to the tourism sector. It had so far provided soft loans worth Bt5 billion to the sector and was ready to give an additional loan support. (MCOT online news)
