5 bn THB arranged for vaccine development

BANGKOK, 19 January 2011 (NNT) – The Ministry of Public Health has arranged a budget of five billion THB for vaccine and vaccine factory development in order to produce more types of vaccine domestically and reduce imports.

According to Public Health Minister Jurin Laksanawisit, the cabinet has approved the construction of a vaccine factory to reduce vaccine imports. The ministry will then establish a National Vaccine Development Institute, as well as other infrastructure including more personnel, while providing support to vaccine research.

Thailand thus far has been able to produce only two kinds of vaccine for domestic uses, including encephalitis vaccine by the Government Pharmaceutical Organization (GPO) and tuberculosis vaccine by the Thai Red Cross Society.

The approved five billion THB budget will be used to develop vaccine and manufacturing factory with an aim to produce seven types of vaccine in Thailand within ten years, namely vaccines against diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, hepatitis, Japanese encephalitis, tuberculosis and dengue fever.

The ministry has also targeted to build the first model vaccine storage in ASEAN in order to store prototype vaccines for quality examination prior to ordering further purchases in the country and the region in the future.

Troop reinforcement on Thai Cambodian border is only a precautionary measure

SRAKEAW, 19 January 2011 (NNT)- Commander of Army Region 1 Major General Udomdej Sitabutr has revealed that troop reinforcement along the Thai-Cambodian border in Srakeaw province is not only for the protection against Cambodia but also for making sure the planned-movements by yellow-shirted activists will not turn violent.

According to Major General Udomdej, the situation along the border has been peaceful despite more troops have been deployed by Cambodia. The move is considered part of the routine commonly practiced along the border in dispute. Moreover, an increase in the number of troops will make it more difficult for drug traffickers and illegal immigrants to enter Thailand.

Regarding the Thailand Patriots Network members who planned to rally in Sakaew in protest of Cambodia arresting one of their core-leaders, Veera Somkwamkid, the commander said the rally could further complicate the border issue and the group should call it off. As for the release of Veera, who remains behind bars in Cambodia, the General said the Network should leave the matter to the government, as the latter was duty-bound to bring him home.

Bangchak to raise biodiesel B100 production

BANGKOK, 19 January 2011 (NNT) – Domestic oil refinery and retailer Bangchak Petroleum Plc is planning to increase biodiesel B100 production capacity to 400,000 liters per day this year if the government announces to use only biodiesel B5 nationwide.

According to Bangchak Petroleum President Dr Anusorn Sangnimnuan, the company has plans to increase biodiesel B100 production if the government is certain on biodiesel B5 policy. The current production capacity is at 300,000 liters per day.

The company will need about 100 million THB for investment to increase the targeted production capacity, and the investment fund will come mainly from two sources, including shares selling and partial profit of the company.

Bangchak currently produces 240,000 liters of diesel B100 daily or 60% of the total production capacity since its demand is not rising significantly because the public still have both diesels B3 and B5 as their options. In addition, there are many diesel B100 producers so the total production in the market remains high.

The company now has six storage tanks for biodiesel B100. It is investing on two additional storage tanks, each with a storing capacity of 10 million liters in order to meet with the expected increasing stock. They are projected to be completed by the end of this year.

Congested Dhaka to get $1.25 bln expressway

DHAKA, January 19, 2011 (AFP) - Bangladesh agreed Wednesday to build a $1.25 billion elevated expressway to ease crippling congestion in its capital in a deal with an Italian-Thai joint venture firm.

The 26.5-kilometre (16-mile) road will connect Dhaka's northern suburbs with the city's south, transport ministry spokesman Abu Naser said.

Premchai Karnasuta, head of the Italian-Thai Development Company, and Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan, a senior Bangladesh government official, signed the deal.

"Italian-Thai won the contract in a competitive bidding. It will build the elevated expressway in 42 months at a cost of 8,703 crore taka ($1.25 billion) -- 27 percent of which will be funded by the government," Naser told AFP.

The government has also announced plans to build six other flyovers, three of which are already under way, at a cost of more than 300 million dollars to connect with the new expressway.

A 2009 study found that traffic in Dhaka is at a standstill for an average of 7.5 hours a day due to the record number of cars hitting the city roads, and the new expressway is expected to alleviate the "operational disorder" on the roads, Naser said.

Dhaka's population of 13 million is forecast to double over the next 20 years and thanks to the country's eight consecutive years of about six percent growth, traffic conditions are expected to worsen.
