Bambina is probably on the right track, but it would help if you could give us the surrounding context as well.

'sa' can be short for both 'sak' and 'sia', depending on the rest of the sentence.

by saying ซะงั้น, สักอย่างนั้น or ซักอย่างนั้น, the speaker has implied they have accepted the situation facing them, and then will get on with whatever they are going to do based on that new state of play.

Maybe bad example but something along the lines of:

"Its going to rain today, ซะงั้น, lets bring an umbrella with us (given that we weren't orginally going to bring one)".

Thanks for all your replies.

Here's one example I came across:

ไม่มีมารยาท (ซะงั้น)...(and then continues with a Thai joke about a rude bus driver).

how about,'oh well', as in resigned to the situation.

In the joke quoted the mother's upset because the bus driver says her child is the ugliest he's ever seen, but when the person sitting next to her sympathises with her rage and offers to hold her child whilst she tells the driver what she thinks , he says, 'I'll hold the monkey whilst you...'

The title is 'manners' ฃะงั้น , the writer suggests, manners, well we can't do much about them,(as in this situation explained), perhaps accompanied by a shrug of the shoulders.

Is a teenager slang word, it's from เสียอย่างนั้น which means something like 'the thing which happens we don't expect before' or ' why it's turned to this way'

For examples;

You didn't expect that it would rain but it rains.

A: Oh, I'm sorry. Tomorrow I can't go with you as I promised you.

B: ซะงั้น (with disappointed mood.)

From the joke, the guy who offer to hold her kid is expected to be polite but he said the thing which she doesn't expect to hear from him. ซะงั้น :o

'oh well' fits perfectly

Hard to find a straight translation, but I'd say can be somewhere along the lines of

"Somehow it ended up that way... (geeze..)"

"How's that, huh?"

"Just like that! (The nerve!)"

".... weirdly enough."

"Isn't it ironic..." :D

It can actually have slightly different meanings, depending on the situation.

some examples:

When I carry an umbrella around, it never rains, but whenever I don't have it with me, it'll rain very heavily... เป็นซะอย่างงั้นอ่ะ ("That's just how it is!" or "Ain't that great.. *sigh*")

.....................................................................

from an actual news article (remember, this is Thailand :D):

"Last year good planning resulted in little traffic congestion. However, the traffic flow was so good that the vendors started complaining that there should at least be some congestion, so they could sell their goods. When there aren't any traffic jams they couldn't sell much. ก็เป็นซะอย่างนั้น ("Hm, for some reason it's like that" or "Huh, ain't that ironic?") :D So new plans were made, so cars would move along steadily, with stops at various points, for a win-win situation that benefits both tourists and vendors."

.....................................................................

She said she wasn't pregnant, but who would believe that, as her belly was so obviously large! :o

.....................................................................

somebody skipping his bill:

He just walked off and disappeared, just like that! (Imagine!)

.....................................................................

somebody asking for something you've worked hard to get:

(rough translation 'cuz literally it sounds too gruesome:) It took me blood, sweat, and tears to get, but she just came out of nowhere and asked for it, the nerve!

So ฃะงั้น can express surprise and indignation, as well as resignation, SK.

Oh well; ฃะงั้น - thank you for your detailed examples, far superior to any dictionary.
