PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA (BNO NEWS) -- The Pittsburgh Stealers on Sunday became the AFC champions after defeating the New York Jets 24-19, making their third Super Bowl appearance in the past six seasons, the NFL's official website reported.

Stealers' running back Rashard Mendenhall had a big first half with 95 of his 121 yards and a touchdown, while quarterback Ben Roethlisberger - who began the season with a four-game suspension - threw for 133 yards, completing 10 of his 19 throws. He also threw two interceptions.

The Jets were able to rally back under second-year quarterback Mark Sanchez in the second half after finishing the first with only a field goal to give the Stealers a 24-3 lead. However, the Stealers' defense stood strong, showcasing a strong front seven throughout the game, and was able to score off a recovered fumble and make a goal-line stand.

Sanchez finished the game with two touchdown passes, completing 20 of his 33 passes for 233 yards.

The Stealers will be facing the Green Bay Packers in the upcoming Super Bowl, which is scheduled to take place on February 6 in Cowboy Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
