WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) -- The White House and the U.S. State Department on Wednesday congratulated the Government and people of Afghanistan on the inauguration of their Parliament.

The White House called the seating of the Afghan Parliament in Kabul a "significant milestone in the progression of Afghanistan's democracy."

"The constructive debate and co-operation between Afghanistan's Office of the President and the recently elected members of Parliament demonstrates the Afghan commitment to ensuring that the will of the Afghan people is carried out and democratic principles are prioritized," the White House National Security Council Spokesman Mike Hammer stated.

Hammer also encouraged Afghans to begin an inclusive dialogue on electoral reform, adding that the U.S. looks forward to continuing to work in partnership with the Government of Afghanistan and the new parliament as it carries out its Constitutional role on behalf of the Afghan people.

Meanwhile, the State Department commended the voters in particular, "who have steadfastly and courageously supported peace and democracy despite tremendous challenges," the deparment's spokesman Philip Crowley said.

"We look forward to supporting the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan as the executive, legislative, and judicial branches work together to advance the priorities of the Afghan people."
