Ten die when scaffolding collapses in the Philippines

2011-01-27 12:31:21 GMT+7 (ICT)

MANILA, PHILIPPINES (BNO NEWS) -- At least 10 people died on Thursday when a group of construction workers in the Philippines fell when a scaffolding on a building where they were working collapsed, local media reported.

The accident happened in Makati City at around 11.45 a.m. local time when a railing which was holding a group of construction workers suddenly fell. The Philippine Daily Inquirer cited Makati Mayor Jejomar "Junjun" Binay Jr. as saying that 10 people had been killed.

Few details were immediately available, but Police Chief Superintendent Froilan Bonifacio said the incident occurred in Makati City when the scaffolding of the building, reportedly a residential condominium under construction, collapsed and landed on the seventh floor, the Philippine Star reported.

Makati Mayor Junjun Binay already arrived on the scene, and local authorities have cordoned off the area as rescue teams continue to work. Binay said the death toll could rise.
