Sungai-Kolok to increase security levels during Chinese New Year

NARATHIWAT, 30 January 2011 (NNT)-Sungai Kolok district chief, Somkiat Suwannimit, has instructed security officers in his jurisdiction to provide safety for residents and foreigners visiting Thailand through the border in Narathiwat province during the Chinese New Years Celebration.

Security will be increased particularly along the border and at ferry piers as Malaysian tourists are flocking into Thailand. Vistors arriving on a ferry will undergo an intensive search by soldiers and other security units. All of 7 wharfs have now been under strict surveillance which Malaysian tourists reportedly said to have felt safe during their trip to Thailand.

Businesses in Sungai Kolok has been quiet, people are not shopping as much compared to last year due to rising commodity prices. People are only buying just enough items needed for the celebrations. However, sales of gold have never been better since the prices have decreased to 19,700 baht per baht gold. Gold is one of the popular products for Thais of Chinese descent on this occassion.
