Yellow shirts were 'treated better'

By The Nation

Natthawut Saikua, a detained red-shirt leader, cried foul yesterday over "double standards" by the government, saying red-shirt leaders had been held in custody for over eight months but two yellow-shirt leaders arrested last week were quickly freed on bail.

Natthawut wrote a letter to vent his frustration.

Pheu Thai Party spokesman Prompong Nopparit told a press conference Natthawut complained in the letter that charges laid against red-shirt leaders were overblown and the Department of Special Investigation had rushed to file them.

Natthawut said authorities were apparently trying to keep the red-shirt leaders locked up for as long as possible because eight months had passed, but there was still no progress in the terrorism case against them.

He said in his letter that the red-shirt leaders were denied the right to temporary release even though they surrendered, while yellow-shirt leaders had been captured.

Natthawut was referring to Chaiwat Sinsuwong and Somboon Thongburan, who were arrested last week and then allowed to go home after posting Bt800,000 in bail.

Prompong noted that Kanit na Nakhon, chairman of the truth and reconciliation committee, had made a similar comment.

Kanit said the case against Chaiwat and Somboon was not treated according to the same principles as the case against the red-shirt leaders.

Kanit said Chaiwat and Somboon were released on bail but bail applications by the red-shirt leaders were rejected despite all of them facing terrorism charges.

Kanit was cited as complaining that the National Police and the Department of Special Investigation would not cooperate with his panel's probe into the two crackdowns on red-shirt protesters on April 10 and May 19.

Prompong said Pheu Thai had learned that certain government leaders and military brass had interfered with the case against the red-shirt leaders, which caused the delay.

The government had to cease its unfair practices immediately so that reconciliation could be realised in the country, he said.

The red shirts will rally on February 13 outside the Criminal Court, instead of the Remand Prison, group leader Thida Thawornset said. On that day, Thida will read a letter from the leaders in jail asking judges not to use double standards.

so what?

the yellows did not orchestrate bombings, employ mercenaries and kill innocent people

the reds deserve exactly what they are getting and more

they should man up, stand tall and stop whinging about it

At least the two Yellow shirts stayed around to be served and arrested, thus bail requests were accepted. On the other side, some leaders of the Red shirt faction appear to have a little rabbit in them as they are kind of hard to find.

Getting one's just desserts.

Try looking objectively at what the Yellows did - compared to what the Reds did.

Thai justice system is doing a rather good job overall. Too bad they have to devote so much time and resources to dealing with the Reds - though one wonders what they'd be doing if they weren't so distracted - cleaning up government corruption perchance?

exactly, despite giving his word and making promises to turn himself into the authorities, Arisman has jumped bail that was given to him in April 2009!!

taking the example of his puppet-master Thaksin........

Its so sad you believe that. Who fired the grenades into the yellow shirts from the overpass(who as all the grenades). Who were the men with guns, actually shooting at motor bike taxi drivers from the back of a pick up near Don Muang. Why did the army not move the yellows when the country was crippled at Survanabhumi Airport. Its not hard, work it out. I put your poor recollection of the facts down to selective memory loss. Stop reading the Thai Media, known worldwide as just a government propoganda tool. Maybe you can help me because my memory is also bad, when it was allegded that some grenades were launched into the crowds, from the red encampment, did the revered forensic lady (Porntip?) do a full on scene investigation. Why have we never heard her report. Maybe its in the interest of 'National Security' . Why is it not possible to tell from which direction the bullet came from that killed Seh Daeng, simply it will point the finger at the military and its black hand. Who fired into the Press hotel, to scare them, who shot all those journalists - some in the back while running for cover. Why have no foreign media been asked to participate in the enquiry into the shootings, maybe because they will tell what they saw and that will only implicated the real villans in this peace.

Forget Takky just realise the inequalities of this nation. They are so bad people run at bullets to defend their beliefs. Its easy for someone like you to 'type the tripe' . Nobody knows the full picture in Thailand, just some know more than others

"Who were the men with guns, actually shooting at motor bike taxi drivers from the back of a pick up near Don Muang." - one man with a hand gun.

"Why did the army not move the yellows when the country was crippled at Survanabhumi Airport." - They were there for 9 days. There was a court case that was about to result in the disbanding of the PPP. Why go in with the army when the protesters were going to be moving on in a couple of days anyway?

"Why is it not possible to tell from which direction the bullet came from that killed Seh Daeng" - exactly how do you tell the direction of a bullet that hits a target that is moving, especially when you can't get in and investigate the scene for another month? Which way was Sae Daeng facing when he was shot? Certainly, there can be some assumptions made, but it's a bit difficult to come up with something with certainty.

"Why have no foreign media been asked to participate in the enquiry into the shootings" - Where in the world do foreign media participate in criminal enquiries?

When the Yellows occupied Gov. House there were almost daily grenade attacks... aimed at the Yellows. When the Reds camped at Pan Fa and Ratchaprasong there were also daily grenade attacks... aimed at the enemies of the Reds. The Red casualties didn't begin until they tried to occupy an Army HQ building.

Double standards? Maybe, but if the Reds last May had acted as the Yellows (and the current Reds) are acting now, I don't think that anyone would have been shot. The Govt. seems to have almost infinite patience with peaceful protesters.

He's preaching to the choir and no one else.

Double Standards is one of their rallying cries, so of course he tries that on regularly.

And of course he conveniently forgets his own speeches and actions

that endangered the lives of 10s of thousands,

and disrupted the lives of millions for months at a time.

No sympathy for his self-created plight.

Yes, I do wonder what he thinks of Jatuporn and Veera at this time.

A weird duo in juxtaposition to both be out on the loose.

So a Red Shirt Protest on Feb. 13 and one on Feb. 19

Ordinary National Educational Test (ONET) for Matthayom 6 (Grade 12) students is due to be held on February 19-20.

February 19 is the same day of a planned anti-government protest.

The demonstrators will march from Ratchaprasong intersection to Democracy Monument.

which comes on the heel of another Red Shirt pronouncement just last week on rallies

Red Shirt co-leader and Opposition MP Jatuporn Prompan said the UDD would adjust their strategy and protest only once a month in the future to avoid making trouble for the public.

:annoyed: Will they ever get their act together? Can they at least coordinate in order to avoid such blatant lies?

Someone should remind Natthawut that "double standards" don't apply to "triple offenders".... July 2007, April 2009, and May 2010

Four Red Shirt leaders in court over 2007 protest at Privy Council president's residence

BANGKOK - Four Red Shirt leaders on Monday morning appeared at the Criminal Court to hear evidence against them in the case charging them besieging the residence of Privy Council President and former Prime Minister Prem Tinsulanonda in 2007.

The four anti-government United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) leaders are Veera Musikapong, Nuttawut Saikua, Weng Tojirakarn, and Wiphuthalaeng Phatthanaphumthai.

hmmm tt is back?

Just recently there were convictions of yellows (for events that occurred AFTER the first red shirt violence.

Every other claim you make is conjecture. Simply Red (musical allusion) propaganda. The fact that tt skips over is the EXTREMELY violent history of the reds, the fact that they were using military ordnance, and most importantly the fact that they were calling for terrorist acts to happen. tt suggests that someone else (other than Seh Daeng) was responsible for the grenade attacks even though Seh Daeng announced the attacks were coming in advance. Disingenuous arguments to say the least .....

Then we can add that the reds on the board just ignore threads like "Thaksin calls on people to vote ptp" etc .... Why? It doesn't fit in with the " Reds are just a social movement" and instead it shows that this is still just about Thaksin.

You say

"Nobody knows the full picture in Thailand, just some know more than others"

You realize of course you are the others.

How come you didn't try to say it was some Nefarious people who invaded the hospital or tried to burn Bangkok down. Or at the top of there lungs over loud speakers urged red shirts to burn Bangkok down.

Most of the red shirt lovers have learned that the public is not buying there crap any more. You like your leader have obviously not. Do you recieve money from Mr Thaksin or is it through untraceable channels.

Talk is cheap. Your actions showed your true colors.

Both are just as bad.

Ah, the one incident where the reds in the streets were attacking the PAD vehicle.

resurrected back from the long distant past. Like a Phi Krasu, it can't die

it just drags after 'red enemies' by it's tongue inexorably.

And one guy with one pistol fired back, this after weeks of hand grenades being dropped

on the PAD camp at night. Gee, if I thought 50-100 screaming reds were attacking my truck and

ONE might have a grenade, I might consider firing warning shots too.

Using this rather old clip to ineffectively say; Oh they are both the same doesn't work any more.

It was confirmed today in the other paper, by none other than Red Shirt Leader Jatuporn that the Red Shirts they will have two protests this month, one on Feb. 13 and one on Feb. 19.

He further stated that at the Feb. 19 rally in Ratchaprasong, the Red Shirts will decide whether to have a protracted rally or not. This would go against their earlier proclamations of limiting rallies there to two hours.

May I remind you that k. Jatuporn is one of the leaders of the UDD faction of the red-shirts. He is not a red-shirt leader. We have at least five or six factions each with their own leaders, or organisation team.

As for protracted rallies time for the government to disperse PAD and TPN first. We can't have double standards, now can we? Should be relatively easy as well, less protesters and relatively harmless as well ;)

I think it's fair to follow the media's lead on what group they belong to.

Red Shirt co-leader and Opposition MP Jatuporn Prompan

If the Red Shirts can clarify who is who with the media, I'd be more than happy to follow suit.

I certainly wouldn't want to inadvertently say someone was such and such when they weren't and so will leave it to the reporters to say who the particular Red Shirts are assigned to in their articles. Not that it really seems to make much difference in the first place.

As for protracted rallies time for the government to disperse PAD and TPN first. We can't have double standards, now can we? Should be relatively easy as well, less protesters and relatively harmless as well

As for the rally times, I think it was mentioned mainly based on the Red Shirts having earlier proclaimed it to be an issue for themselves and that in partnership agreement with the merchant association had agreed to limit themselves to two hours. That agreement is now apparently up for reconsideration by the Red Shirts.

Red Shirt published a book on coup d'etat

BANGKOK, 3 February 2011 (NNT)-The UDD or Red Shirt has launched a handbook on anti-coup d'etat with an aim to give their members a crash course on how to respond to the military coup.

Acting Red Shirt Leader Thida Thawornsate has said that Thailand would not be any different than Myanmar if the government was constantly overpowered by the military.

The other Red Shirt leader, Jatuporn Promphan, said the Red Shirt protesters will gather around the Supreme Court on 19 February before moving on foot to Rachaprasong intersection.

Mr. Jatuporn added that the UDD will prolong the mass rally if the government does not respond to their requests as it did to the Yellow Shirts.
