4evermaat
I am looking for a cast iron pot or pan for durable, stick resistant cooking. I need one that will work with a induction cooker. Preferibly one that is enameled, but bare cast iron is fine also. I am in Chumphon, but at least if someone has seen these elsewhere, it would be a start. Thanks. Edited January 31, 2011 by 4evermaat
beammeup
Me too. I found a cast iron skillet with about a 1 cm lip at central or somewhere like that but a good old cast iron frying pan would be a nice addition to my kitchen
sbk
verasu carries cast iron cookware. they have a couple of stores in Bangkok and also online. not cheap but, there you go http://verasu.com/product_subcategories.php?cid=
4evermaat
I broke down, sucked it up, and decided to buy a induction-compatible frying pan. They had one NOT at Makro, NOT at Tesco Lotus and NOT at Carrefour where they sell ONLY the induction heating plate. (I searched almost everywhere for an old fashion single electric range--no one had one). Dont you love when a major chain sells a product (especially exclusively), but none of the compatible accessories? A local Thai cookware shop had (teflon, not cast iron) one 560 baht for the 24cm; the 28cm was 910 baht. It was about 100 meters from the Farang Bar in Chumphon. verasu carries cast iron cookware. they have a couple of stores in Bangkok and also online. not cheap but, there you go http://verasu.com/pr...ories.php?cid=4 This link doesn't work. There was one place that I saw from another posting that had cast iron pans from lodge. True Value store. They haven't replied to my email yet. raro
We will introduce shortly raro's hardcore hardware - still waiting for the prototype. A 30 cm (12" for the metrically challenged) pan with two handles, cast in one piece. No plastic handles or any other nonsense! First batch probably ready for delivery by end of Feb. And yes, we are just about starting to sponsor Thaivisa in this matter.

These are available on the local market if you want to try one: Sorry for the lousy mobile phone picture but it is a 30cm cast iron pan, 1 cm side and bottom thickness with the handles part of the same casting. The depth is 6-7cm. They work fine but are very heavy and also expensive. I think the two I bought were over 700 baht each.

Boksida
Yes, a true cast iron pot for 700 baht is very cheap. True value quote me 3000 for similar size. I got mine at a Nakorn Kilo shop. I think they may have a few branches in the north of Thailand at least. To my surprise, I have just found that they have a website (www.nakornkilo.com). If their online store is run anything like their physical store, I would not expect much. I had to root around in the back of the shop to find what I wanted and then insist that somebody sell it to me. The pans are a good casting with no air holes and the inside and top have been machined. I have had quite a few items cast locally and usually the biggest cost is the price of the mould. I expected this to be cheaper as the mould would be very simple and the price should come down for a mass produced item.
NanaFoods
I had to root around in the back of the shop to find what I wanted and then insist that somebody sell it to me. Too funny... and typical. But that pan sure looks nice and thick. Maybe I want one. I am also curious of the actual make-up of the metal. I've haven't seen anything like that made in Thailand. FYI - Here is some info I found on cast iron: http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-cast-iron.htm Here is some info on how to season your cast iron skillet/pan: http://www.howtodothings.com/food-and-drink/a3371-how-to-season-a-cast-iron-skillet.html

jazzbo
guaranteed without dynamite ... I guess you think that is funny ... and as you say you are 'still waiting' for the prototype .. I had a cast iron pan crack on me once ... no flying pieces but that has also been known to happen ... Staub in France -- though a 100 year old company -- bought an existing cast iron business 30 years ago ... maybe some trial and error there ... at any rate good luck -- one has to start somewhere ... but I sure hope that you give those prototypes a long multi-conditional work-out.. BTW as OP referred to induction surface: Can Staub be used on ceramic glass tops Yes. Staub cookware can be used on all heat sources, including induction. Products with the black matte exterior are coated on the bottom with blue ceramic which will protect your delicate surfaces. jazzbo
PC = "Crack or shatter posing burn and laceration hazards to consumers ..." at 250 C + with you standing about a half meter away ... My only suggestion to Kuhn R. is that he spend a little more time product testing between (as of now) not having his prototype and saying deliveries will begin before the end of February -- this year I presume. Cheers I'd kill to find a cast iron dutch oven over here, a camp style one with 3 feet and a flanged lid. After looking for skillets in Chiang Mai I gave up and flew my 14" cast iron skillet over this past year in my checked bag... my land lady washed it for me while my back was turned the second or third time I used it here... If you buy find one, be sure no natives or unenlightened farangs are allowed to touch it without a thorough education on the wonders of a proper cure and how it is maintained. Cheers I know this is an old thread, but I just bought a new cast-iron skillet a few days ago, and I saw this exact brand/model Lodge 10in Dutch oven right next to it. I grabbed it right up until I saw the price - 6500b - ouch. Dropped that, and went ahead and bought the 10in Lodge cast-iron skillet for the grossly inflated price of 2400b. The only place I could find real cast-iron cookware was at the Paragon department store. Spent the day looking around everywhere else, until finally figured "if somebody would have it, they would - but will surely be expensive". Obscenely expensive, but glad I bought it. Used it a lot already, and it will last a lifetime. If you're really aching for that Dutch oven, I'll bet its still sitting there at Paragon. Sure looks nice, only 6500b... zeusbheld
True Value also carry Lodge cast iron cookware. the only True Value i've been to is the one at CDC which is posh and boutiquey and next to useless as a hardware store... but they have Lodge skillets and dutch ovens. there are some japanese cast-iron pots i'd love to find in Bangers. i've heard good things about Oigen for example... but i'm not optimistic. i've not seen much in the way of cast iron around Chatuchak, if i find anything interesting in Chinatown i'll mention it...not optimistic though. seems like for a dutch oven or a skillet, your reasonable choices here are Lodge, Lodge or Lodge. or, maybe, Lodge. yougivemebaby
On the fourth floor of Emporium then have any type of cast iron ... that you need. yes it is VERY expensive. I did purchase a 12 in (?) skillet from paragon. it was on sale though and a whoppin 2000 baht. I think normally it was 4500. My maid has washed it in soap TWO TIMES. JESUS ! Next time I will hide it better. She still does not understand this concept. I think I will have to toss my seasoned wok too because i think it already oxidized. I can taste and smell metal whenever I cook with it. I will see if I can re-season it. Has anyone tried Alibaba? There has got to be Chinese or SE Asian countries that manufacture these things. I know there isn't a HUGE demand but dam_n. We could really start getting some kind of real forum that would allow us to buy things we want at non outrageous prices. A database of sorts. Sounds like a gold mine.
